The front steps of Olympus House are an effing circus with the new fraternity recruits going wild. No, scratch that. A circus has orderly lines, seating, and a loudspeaker that would come in very handy right now. All our new pledges are wild with excitement. It’s more like trying to grab people's attention from a Jumanji stampede. Except these guys are the rampaging animals. And they're all hyped up on Red Bull. I mean, I get it, bid day is insane. It was only a couple years ago that I was in their shoes, so pumped up with adrenaline that I was practically bouncing off the walls. But now, as the recruitment chairman, I gotta get these guys in line, and that starts with making them listen when I speak. I take a deep breath, getting ready to bust out my big boy pants and everything when Ares pierces the air with a whistle like an air-raid siren. “Shuddap and open your ears!” he bellows, his Boston accent standing out in Georgia even more after a summer at home. The crowd falls silent. I swear to God, it’s like that record-scratch moment in the movies. Hey, it works for me. I know bid day is nuts, but unless you want this guy busting your nuts,” – I jerk my head at Ares – “you pay attention when your senior frat brothers are talking.” I try to channel some inner drill sergeant I didn't know I had in me. Ares is our resident war machine. That's how it works at Pi Alpha Nu. We're one of the oldest and most prestigious fraternities in the entire country. Everyone who is anyone wants to join the house officially named after Pan, the playful goat-god. That's the official name, the one on our website and on the custom-made t-shirts we're all wearing. However, no one local calls this place Pi Alpha Nu, or PAN. Our frat is known as Olympus House to almost everyone. That’s because once you're in, not like these fresh-faced pledges, but officially a member, you’re awarded the name of a Greek god or other major mythical character. Names get retired and reused when the guys who own them graduate. That means I'm not the first Apollo to grace these halls, but I like to think I'm the best. That's not just ego either. I'm sure a lot of the past guys had my golden hair, probably half of them played an instrument or two, but how many of the past Apollos had a twin sister? I haven't done a deep dive, but my guess is not many. The new guys are all wearing their matching shirts with the fraternity's letters emblazoned across the chest, and I can see on their faces that they all want this so bad. I remember how far I would go to prove I was right for this fraternity. I could tell these freshmen to strip down, stick some chicken feathers in their butt cracks, and do their best impression of a rooster, and the campus would be full of naked dudes cock-a-doodle-dooing. I won't, obviously. Not just because literally no one needs to see that much, well, cock all at once, but because Olympus House likes to keep things light.
