Stay In Touch About Author Stacey M other’s Day, Dallas, Texas “She’d be proud of you.” The husky note in my dad's voice threatened to choke me up, so I didn't look at him, just leaned into his hug and nodded. He was just under an inch shorter than me now, shorter when I wore heels, but as always, he still felt larger than life, and I was happy to let him hold me and comfort me, as we stood in the cemetery at the marker that served as my mother's memorial. It was a yearly tradition since I was seven, the first Mother's Day after my mom had died from cancer, leaving the two of us gutted. "I think she'd be proud of both of us," I told him a minute later after we pulled away and pretended we both hadn't been on the verge of tears—another tradition. My father had never been ashamed to show emotion, and I was glad of it, but we much preferred to do it behind closed doors and not in a cemetery where others were coming and going. He smiled. “You’re right. She would.” I tucked my arm through his as we started for the car, parked farther up the curving strip of blacktop. The heat of the early Texas summer was already beating down on us, and I was glad I'd left the lightweight bolero that went with my sundress in the car. When we reached my dad's prized Ferrari, I had a fine sheen of sweat on my forehead, and I was eager to feel the air conditioning on my skin. "I will not miss getting away from Texas heat for a while. Not at all." “Don’t rub it in,” he said with a playful scowl. “I won’t.” I winked at him. “Much.” “Sure you won’t.” I laughed as he started the car and pulled away from the curb. As he drove, I opened my phone and checked my email to see how my assistant was doing with her search for a place for me to stay while I was in Boston. The property there was costly, and I was too private to enjoy staying in a hotel for an extended period. “Damn it,” I said with a sigh after perusing the offerings the realtor had sent this time around. “What’s wrong?” “An annoyance, really” I shrugged and glanced at him. “Not having much luck finding a place I like to stay at while I’m in Boston.” He rattled off an address. “Look that up.” "That sounds familiar." I looked it up and smiled as I figured out why. It was the building my father had partnered with somebody a while back to flip. He hadn't enjoyed the partnership, and the guy had made more decisions not long after and gone belly-up, but Dad had bought that building. "Why am I looking at this place? Isn't it mostly business offices and retail?" "Mostly…yes. But we kept several top floors as they were—luxury apartments furnished for short-term rental and long-term leasing for traveling executives…like yourself. The penthouse unit booking was unexpected cancelled on Friday. I meant to ask if you'd like to use it since it's vacant. You can log into the company website and pull up the unit pictures to see if you like it." I did that as he navigated to the restaurant where we'd made reservations. The stark white paint and pops of color in slate blue and soft peach were soothing, and the Space was roomier than many options I'd seen in the city. "I'm taking it," I said after I saw the bathroom—and the deep, luxurious Jacuzzi tub. I already knew just how much time I'd been spending on my feet, climbing up and down flights of stairs, so the idea of the expenditure evenings soaking in the tub sealed the deal. "Alright, then. Call Trinity and let her know—she'll ensure it doesn't get listed as available again." “I’ll text her. She’s a mom, too, Dad…and it’s Sunday, besides.” He huffed out a breath. "As much as I pay that woman, if I want to text her every day at three a.m., nobody should give me lip over it." "If Trinity and I didn't give you lip, you wouldn't know what to do with yourself." My stomach rumbled, and I looked up and
