Sorel Chapter 1 Manon The girl looked under sixteen, and she wasn’t the first, which played with my head. While I believed we had a right to decide what we did with our bodies, if I could relive my life at fifteen, I wouldn’t have shacked up with Peyton. As far as I was concerned, I wasn’t put on this earth to be a man’s plaything, contrary to my dear mother trying to convince me otherwise. With the benefit of hindsight, I wished I’d dropped my V-card on my own terms and not my mother’s. As I studied Sapphire, with those wide, innocent blue eyes switching from hope to fear with every blink, I felt like telling her to run away before her life became a tangle of poor decisions threatening to mess with her head and future. But she practically pleaded with me to allow her to auction. “Do you have any proof of age?” “I just turned sixteen. Promise.” She licked her finger and held it in the air. And I was meant to buy that cute gesture as proof? I opened my hand. “ID.” Though checking girls’ ages wasn’t required, I did anyhow. It wasn’t just to protect myself should the police come calling, but because my conscience demanded to know. She fumbled in her bag and passed me her card. We were in the dressing room at My Cherry—my name for Ma Chérie. It was early evening, and my time to pep talk the nervous ones. Like convincing them that selling their virginity would buy them a head start in life, even though most didn’t need convincing, as they had come to me via website enquiries. With my grandmother’s blessing, I operated from Merivale. She’d even suggested a sitting room at the back as my new office. As much as she hated the Cherry bar, I figured she liked that I had some kind of focus. And after all the shit that had gone down at the Pond after I fucked up, well okay, more like fucked the boss—not Uncle Ethan, of course, I’m not that twisted—I needed something to stay out of trouble. Earning money also meant I didn’t have to beg my mother for cash, which always descended into her raving about how I needed to step up my efforts to rope Rey into marrying me. Mm, well, I had news for her. Like never. Sapphire kept chewing her already-destroyed nails. Another red flag. She was too nervous for this scene. And I was sick of having to convince unwilling girls. I’d done that in the beginning, mainly to keep Rey off my back. When I’d reminded my mother that Rey wouldn’t want me because of all the sex I’d already had, she’d said, “He doesn’t need to know that. Just prick your finger to make sure there’s blood on the sheet.” I had no intention of ever fucking Rey, but I’d gone along with it anyway to avoid listening to her rattle on about the advantages of being with a rich man. Been there, done that with Peyton. Designer jeans and dresses, nice dinners, and even a Hermes bag for my sixteenth birthday didn’t bring me that much joy in the end because the bigger my tits grew, the more he couldn’t keep it up. In any case, I planned to make my own money and go for someone who made my skin tingle with just a glance, like Drake. Sapphire was beautiful, and I could see her fetching a good price, but that thought made my stomach curl because she was way too sensitive. One needed to be tough to sell themselves to anyone. Giving girls a kick start in life was the only positive about My Cherry, and at least most of the men were filthy rich and generally well-behaved. The aggressive ones were gotten rid of quick smart. Rey wasn’t stupid. The last thing he needed was the law to come crashing down on his sleazy paradise. “Are they all old?” Sapphire bit her lip. I should have taken her to an ice cream parlour rather than a dressing room filled with lingerie. “No. Some are even in their late twenties. Not many, though. There is one youngish guy who recently joined.” Her eyes sparked. “Really? Is he hot?” I had to squeeze my lips to stymie a condescending smile, because that could have been me once. And Peyton was hot. My mother chose well there. Most of the clients at My Cherry weren’t, however. The good-looking ones were often cocky and even heavy-handed and got quickly tossed out.
