Amelia Barr Chapter One HENLI I shift my attention left, then right, before I take a step off of the curb and start crossing the street. My heels click against the asphalt, my concentration level on the highest possible as I make my way across the street in hopes that I don’t stumble on the little loose rocks in the road. I’m halfway across when I hear the sound of a million bumblebees grow louder and louder. My steps falter. Eyeing down the street in the direction of said bumblebees, I see a whole horde of motorcycles headed directly for me. My heart thumps against my ribs, slamming against them and I instantly wonder if it’s going to break them. Fear slices through me. Oh. Shit. My high-heeled shoes are not going to take me across this street fast enough. Also, there’s the fact that I’m still just standing here, unmoving. Standing in the middle of the crosswalk for another long moment, I stare at the bikes as they move toward me, caught like a deer in headlights. Finally, my entire body jolts. I try to hurry. I try and although I’m not completely effective, thankfully, I make it to safety before I’m run over by the stampede of bikes, but not without issue. I’m almost in the clear when suddenly, a bike is so close that I can almost smell the rider. I get a hint of leather and grease, my breath hitching at the scent. So, I do the only thing I can think of—I lunge. I lunge forward, reaching out and landing on my hands and knees—in a skirt—on the ground of the downtown area. A busy downtown area. So busy, in fact, that I know I’ve gathered an audience. I hear the collective gasps from the crowd, but like the assholes of the twenty-first century, nobody asks if I’m okay. I know without a doubt that my cheeks are bright red, I’m not sure what else is going on with my face, but I’m so embarrassed. I want to crawl into a hole and expire. My breathing comes out in pants as I look up and try to evaluate myself. Rolling over onto my ass, I look at my extremities, taking them all in. Although I’m a bit worse for wear, I think that I’m going to be okay. My hands have scrapes on them, along with my knees, but I’m probably going to be fine. Maybe. Probably. That’s what I tell myself anyway, because if I don’t, I’ll probably just sit right here and have
