Sarah Nanny for the Single Dad Ex Brother In Law Chapter One SARAH I was going to get my money from that boss of mine if it was the last thing I did. After showing up late twice in one week, even though I told him my kids were sick, he fired me and never gave me my last check. I needed that money desperately and there was no way I was leaving his office today without it. He might be bossy, demanding, and one of the most unhappy men I’d ever met in my life, but I believed he had a heart somewhere in his body. After picking up my kids at the bus stop I walked to the office and piled everyone into the elevator for the fifth floor. “Push 5, Lily. Touch nothing, Isaac.” I sighed and prepared with deep breaths to keep my cool in front of my kids. I hated doing it this way, but after two weeks of leaving messages, I was getting my money today. I closed my eyes and tried not to cry when Isaac pushed six more buttons on the elevator. We were all forced to stop at each floor, apologizing to anyone waiting for the elevator as the doors opened and closed before finally exiting on the 5th floor. “Now I want you both to sit here in the waiting room and watch your sister Scarlett.” I pointed a finger at my oldest, Lily, 8 and glared at Isaac, my 6-years-old. I prayed my emotions hit home with him, so nothing happened. “Mommy loves you.” I smiled to soften the moment. Scarlett sat in her stroller making raspberries so I handed Lily a pacifier. “I will be back in a second. Just sit tight.” I glanced around nervously to make sure no crazy people were in the waiting room and prayed that this meeting would take less than 5 minutes while I stepped up to the reception desk. “Hi. Sarah Barker, I used to work here. I am here to see Mr. Greyson.” “Have a seat and I will let him know you’re here.” His new receptionist smiled so sweetly that I almost blanched on the counter. I drummed my trimmed nails on the counter. “I don’t think so. I know the way. I have my 3 kids there.” I pointed to the corner near the bathroom, the spot furthest away from the exit. “If anything happens to them I am holding YOU personally responsible, so make sure they are safe.” I laughed at her surprised look. “You know you have such beautiful hair; I wish mine looked like that. What a lovely outfit too.” Her eyes grew wide as she looked in their direction and she nodded understanding. “But you can’t just….” I smiled and happily waved her away, heading straight for Mr. Matthew Greyson’s office at the end of the hall. The door was open, so I entered after a quick, cheery knock on the door. His eyes landed on me immediately. I felt his anger and confusion just as I felt my anger when I walked to his desk. “Heaven help me why are you here? I fired you two weeks ago. If you don’t leave now, I will call security.” My body shook with anger but I tamped it down and rested my knuckles against the desk in front of him. I plastered on my southern belle sweet smile and thought of something positive to keep my head from exploding. “You will do no such thing. You owe me for those last two weeks of work.” I controlled my voice to keep emotionless so I didn’t start screaming and my kids heard me. There is no sense getting all upset and negative. “I called for the last two weeks since you fired me for no reason and I need my check.” Mr. Greyson was not the man anyone put demands on but today the tables were going to be turned and I would not accept his high-handed attitude like I had for far too long in the six months I worked for him. He leaned back in his chair, glaring at me. His voice loud and foreboding, a look of pure hatred in his eyes. “You will leave now. You are not getting paid for those last two weeks when you barely showed up when I needed you in this office.” “I told you my kids were sick. Would you like to see the doctor's bills because I can show them to you as proof?” I laughed and fluffed my hair. I was just warming up. To think that my former boss, a big shot CEO, thought he could push me around was crazy. I could hear noise coming from outside the door, and when I looked, it was the receptionist. “I’m sorry, I’m not a babysitter, they wouldn’t listen.” My kids came storming through the door, first Lily pushing Scarlet’s stroller. Then Isaac, who decided to hop in like a kangaroo instead of walk, quickly got comfortable in the chair next to me while Lily stood against the wall eyeing the files beside her. I smiled, ready to soak up what it would look like when my former
