 CHAPTER ONE
The compass needle quivered slightly but kept its aim. There was no mistaking its target—the woman in the doorway.
Ellie blinked, looking down at the compass and back up again. It was almost too much to believe. Standing at the threshold was her mom’s twin sister, Sadie. Ellie and Parker’s aunt.
Before this summer, the twins hadn’t even known Sadie existed—their late mother had never once mentioned her. And they certainly hadn’t expected to see her so soon after the fiasco that had just gone down at Haven. Yet here she was, the woman with the very same face Ellie most longed to see—but belonging to the wrong person.
Their father stood in the vestibule, blocking Sadie from entering the house. It was beyond weird to see someone who looked so much like their mom standing right next to him, and in their own home, no less. Ellie could feel her insides tying themselves in knots.
“It’s late and I—I don’t understand what this is about,” their father stammered. “What do you want? I mean, can I help you?”
Ellie’s eyes scanned Aunt Sadie again, then looked over at Parker. Her sister seemed equally stunned, mouth agape, cheeks flushed. Ellie wasn’t sure if her eyebrows could possibly climb any higher up her forehead.
What do we say? Ellie absorbed Parker’s thoughts, tinged with her sister’s typical hundred-mile-per-hour urgency. Why is she here? What does she want? Do you think we can trust her?
Ellie didn’t have an answer for any of it.
Parker glanced down at the compass quivering in Ellie’s hand. If the compass pointed at her, maybe she’s trustworthy?
“I hope so.” Ellie settled on the step to watch the action unfold.
It was curious that the compass tugged in Sadie’s direction, as it seemed to have a knack for pointing toward good things, like leading the twins to safety, or directing them toward their fate. By now Ellie knew it was no accident—like the other objects their mom had left for them, the compass was meant to tell them something. They just needed to figure out what that something was.
Sadie fixed her sparkling gaze on their father. “I’m so sorry to show up unannounced, and at bedtime, no less,” she said. “With everything you’ve been through lately, I know you don’t need another surprise. But I didn’t have any other choice. I promise you, it’s very, very important.”
“Important as in urgent?” their dad raked a hand through his hair, the way he did whenever he got caught in traffic or when the Internet cut out for no apparent reason. “Is someone in danger? Are we in danger?
