ABOUT THE BOOK “How am I meant to work together with a man like that?” How could Duke Derek know that visiting his friend would turn into absolute chaos? With the hostess ill, the governess gone, and his friend called away, Derek is on his way out when the most beautiful lady he has ever met arrives in a flurry of impropriety, stopping him in his tracks. When Grace Hughes receives a desperate letter from her sister, she knows she must go help take care of her niece and nephew. And she would have probably loved it too if it weren’t for the enragingly proper duke offering his unwanted help! Shouldering the responsibility of the Lush children, they find it impossible to work together. Whether they are butting heads or completely besotted by one another, neither can tell which is their true distraction. Only that it stops them from realizing the trap being set up for them, and the grave danger it might bring… CHAPTER 1 I’m terribly afraid that I have taken ill, and it could not have happened at a worse time. I was forced to let my governess go after Mark told me she was so unkind; my children deserve better treatment than that. But now, I don’t know what to do. Even well, I can only do so much. My dear Seth has enlisted the help of an old friend, but I cannot expect him to care for the children or contribute to the other womanly duties. Lady Grace's heart ached as she thought about her sister's plea for help. Tabitha had always been the more practical of the two of them, taking charge of the household and ensuring that everything ran smoothly. Still, she was also prone to the occasional exaggeration. A cold became the flu, a mild inconvenience ruined her entire day... Grace had always admired her sister's strength and determination, but she didn’t quite know what to make of this letter. As the carriage rolled along the winding country roads, Grace's thoughts drifted between her sister's situation and the passing scenery. The sun was shining brightly, casting a warm glow over the landscape. The fields were lush and green, and the flowers were in full bloom. It was a beautiful day, but Grace's mind was preoccupied with the letter's contents . She couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled in her stomach since she had read the note for the first time five days ago. Tabitha's words had been brief and to the point, but Grace could sense the desperation in her tone. Grace had always been the more scholarly of the two sisters, but she knew it was her duty to help when family calls . The carriage continued , passing through small villages and pastures filled with grazing sheep. Lady Grace tried to focus on the scenery, but her thoughts kept returning to her sister and the children. She imagined the chaos that must be unfolding at Tabitha's estate and wondered how she could possibly help. Tabitha’s husband, Lord Oldbury, was a decent man. More decent than most because he actually cared for his wife’s well-being and had an active role in the children’s upbringing. Unfortunately, he was also as hopeless as every other man and in the business of trading, which meant that he was rarely home. The thought made Grace frown as she turned to stare out the little carriage window. As the day wore on, Lady Grace's anxiety grew. Perhaps Tabitha wasn’t exaggerating this time. The thought made her stomach turn. As the carriage rumbled along the winding roads, Lady Grace watched the countryside pass by outside the window. It was as beautiful as ever, but now it was tinged with the discomfort that had settled deeply into Grace’s stomach. The sun began to dip below the horizon as the day grew late, casting a warm golden light over the countryside. Lady Grace watched as the shadows lengthened, and she knew that they were getting closer to their destination. She took a deep breath, feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension as she prepared to face whatever lay ahead. Finally, as the carriage rounded a bend in the road, Grace caught
