HIS TO ENTHRALL “Enthrall” To captivate, to charm, to subjugate, to beguile, to enrapture, to subdue. Bratva Prince. That’s what they called Kazimir Kalashnik. Criminal. That’s what my father called him. Misunderstood. That’s how I saw him. The darkness that surrounded him captivated me. His confidence and entitlement intrigued me. He promised my safety. He promised to watch the world crumble to ash before letting anyone take me from him. His promises beguiled me. It was he who set my world ablaze. Then left me alone in the dying embers. He came back. He subjugated and conquered. It didn’t take long to charm me back into submission. His demons never scared me. He feared they were infectious. ONE KAZIMIR “You wanted to see me?” I murmur as I plop down in the seat in front of my father’s desk, wanting to be anywhere other than here. In this office, in this home, in this fucking country. “We have a bit of a nuisance coming into town.” His thick Russian accent vexing. It’s not the accent that is bothersome, it’s him that makes my teeth grind. “A detective.” “Okay?” I crack my knuckles trying to sit swallowing down the enmity and malediction I wish to voice, but I would pay for it with blood and flesh, and maybe even a bone or two if I tried. “And this detective is different from any other?” I keep my voice level. “He has a daughter. Same age as you.” He doesn’t even give me the respect in answering my question, nor does he bother to look me in the eye when he speaks. “And what? You want me to fuck her, or kill her?” My father gives me that look that can make your blood run cold, but I am desensitized to his pernicious rancor. An impenetrable shield designed specifically for him. “I want you to make her feel welcome at her new school.” I scoff. “Are you saying I have to go to fucking school? Why the fuck can’t you just pay him to go away?” “I’m saying you will do what you are told,” he spits, warning me to tread carefully. “You will go to school, and you will run him out of town using his daughter.” Both of us sit there seething at one another. It doesn’t take much to do, being in each other’s presence alone will do it. It’s no secret that we both loathe each other, but I am his only heir, and in our world, that means everything. I represent him and the family name. He needs me, and I’m held captive here. “Fine.” I can feel my jaw twitch as I clench my teeth harder. The phantom ache in each and every permanent blemish that decorates my body has the rage unfurling in my chest ready to explode like a geyser. But I suppress it, because control is paramount. “When do I start?” His lips curl up into a smug little sneer as he pushes a folder towards me. “Everything is in here. Now, go.” He dismisses me like he would dismiss any of his men. I don’t want to stick around for a moment longer than necessary, so I snatch up the folder and take my leave. “Oh, and Kazimir?” I stop, but don’t turn around. “I’d rather it not get messy, so I’m counting on you to get rid of them without having to kill anyone.” “I won’t let you down, father,” I say dryly. My feet can’t move away from his office fast enough. My fortitude at its lowest and my temper close to its peak. Getting to my room, I close my eyes and take a calming breath as I clench my fists so hard, I feel my veins about to pop. The lump in my throat aches as it doubles in size when I must yet again swallow the tidal wave of emotions from the horrid memories demanding to surface.
