I was having a bad day.” “I’ll bet,” she smirked as she pulled out a fiver and returned it to me. “Although not as bad as the poor man who just wanted to have a donut with his morning coffee. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone cry so hard before --” “Oh, I didn’t make him cry.” I waved away the five-dollar note that she handed back to me. She smiled and popped it into the tip jar. “I meant you,” Lily laughed. “You were the one who was cry --” “I was not!” She raised an eyebrow but then broke into a cheeky grin. I shook my head but did the same. I knew she was just joking around, at least about me crying. As to my hurling abuse at a random citizen who had just been trying to buy a little treat with his morning coffee... like I said, I’d been having a bad day. In my small defense, and regarding that incident, I’d just found out that a case I’d been working on for months was being thrown out because of a beat cop not filing and storing some vital evidence properly. God, I remembered that morning as if it were yesterday, and with the benefit of hindsight, that donut thief was lucky that he had made it out alive. “Thanks again,” I said as I snatched some napkins off the counter and wrapped my juicy, oh-so-very delicious-looking donut in them. It was after midnight, I’d just finished up what was my last bit of work for two whole weeks and was meant to be headed straight home, so I could pass out and possibly never get up again when I spied the lights on in my favorite café - The Good Cup.
