CHAPTER 1 “Are you hurt?” I asked Daryn as he glanced around the museum. I could feel his magic reach out to search the area. “I’m good. There are no more hybrids within the museum, but I can’t scan past the wards. How the hell did they get in here? The wards repel demon energy.” Lochlan knelt beside the fallen man. “I am guessing these hybrids have little demon energy. This guy appears human except for the fangs. He wasn’t as strong as a demon, either. I believe he was allowed in here and only a hunter or council member could do that.” I touched Daryn’s arm and sent a healing warmth into him. There was no injury, but we both felt our magic spike and strengthen both of us. His eyes flared with blue fire and an image of us naked in my bed flashed through my mind, but I wasn’t sure which one of us it originated from. Judging by his slight smirk, I guessed it was me. I clutched the book closer to my chest. “They were after the book, weren’t they?” Lochlan stood. “That would be my guess. The museum has never been infiltrated before, so they are either watching you or figured out where the book was located.” Daryn picked up a small vase sitting on a pillar beside him. “Or someone knew all along it was here, but that only Shannon could access it.” Lochlan glanced between me and Daryn. “Having Shannon out of town all this time is highly suspicious. Is there any chance someone knew she had a connection to the map or the book and ensured she was nowhere near it until they wanted it retrieved?” Daryn placed the vase back on the pedestal gently. “I plan to ask Kliona those questions, but when I called her office to set up a meeting, I was informed she’s on holidays and won’t be back till next week.” Lochlan grunted. “The timing on that is not suspect at all.” “Exactly. Kliona wasn’t lying when she said Shannon was tested after her tenth birthday. I believe she was misled but is covering for someone. I need to find out who that is.” Lochlan pointed at the book in my arms. “What kind of information is in that book, Shannon? I am leery of handing it over to the council with so much uncertainty surrounding it.” I opened the book and flipped through a few pages. “There are protection spells and spells to bless weapons. I don’t have time to go through the entire book.” I closed the book and Daryn pointed to the strange symbols etched into the thick silver cover. “What do those mean?” I ran my fingertips over a symbol that looked like a sun. “I don’t know. Are they runes?” Lochlan leaned closer. “They look more like runes, but if you aren’t sure, then it’s unlikely the council will be able to decipher the book.” The bond between Daryn and me pulsed, but I wasn’t sure if the flicker of excitement originated from him or me. Perhaps both since we glanced at each other before he smiled. “I can’t read the book, so you need to find out what those symbols mean.” “Do you think it’s a warning?” I asked. He shrugged. “Could be. Maybe a protection to ensure only certain people can read the spells inside.” I ran my hand over the ridges of another symbol that looked like a Raven. “It doesn’t feel like it is warded. It should be, shouldn’t it?” “Not if you are the only one who can read it,” Lochlan said. Daryn put his hand on his sheathed Sica blade. “If the demon king got his hands on that book, it could be catastrophic. We have no idea what kind of power he has, especially in the Underworld.” A chill ran up my spine and I inadvertently stepped closer to Daryn. When he put his hand on the small of my back, I realized he felt my apprehension and the bond ensured he was there to reassure me. The chill was replaced by concern as the bond blurred the lines between us. How much longer before there was no Daryn and Shannon and only us? There was nothing about Daryn I didn’t like, except for his stubborn streak, but I hated that I was forced into this bond. That he was. Even my ultimate great grandfather shouldn’t have that power. Despite him being a God. Lochlan pointed to the demon on the ground and glanced at Daryn. “We need to find out who he was. I can’t leave the museum unprotected. Especially now. Once you leave,
