Next In dedication to the books and movies that have inspired my creativity and to my family who has made me never lose sight of my dreams. Chapter one SistersBlairMy birthday was never one of those days that I yearned to celebrate. My sister, on the other hand, loved having a reason to throw a party any chance she could get. She knew that I never liked to celebrate it, but she insisted on trying to make it the happiest day. My birthday always fell on the third week of October when the atmosphere outside changed. The leaves cascaded with reds, oranges, and yellows, and the air was filled with a gentle breeze. These were the only things I loved about this time of year. “Up! Up! Get up!” Holly yelled as she came barging into my room, flinging open the curtains as rays of the sun penetrate my firmly closed eyelids.“Ugh, go away! Five more minutes,” I mumbled, flipping the covers over my head.“It’s time to get ready. We’re going shopping!” she said with so much excitement she almost sang it. As she strode through my room and out the door, she let me know she will be back in ten minutes and I better be ready or else.Fine! I will get up and not sleep the day away even though I would much rather do so. I pulled on my favorite pair of skin-showing ripped jeans, my overly worn rock concert tee, and my black combat boots. Looking in the mirror at how my clothes fit my curvy figure, I thought this is as good as its going to get. After finishing up my morning routine I threw my unruly dark curls up in a messy bun that sat lopsided on my head. I made my way downstairs to see Holly dancing around the kitchen, humming a melody that vaguely sounded like that one musical she watches on repeat. As she saw me, she squealed in delight, ran over, and shoved a plate of food into my face.“I made your favorite! Over easy eggs and avocado toast,” she said enthusiastically.“That’s sweet of you,” I said, taking the plate from her.We quickly finished our breakfast due to Holly’s continued rushing. I’m pretty sure she didn’t even taste it with how fast she consumed her meal. She was already walking out the door before I could put my plate in the sink. I hurried after her, and we jumped in the truck. “You’re driving?” I asked. “Yeah, that a problem?” she said with attitude. “No, be my guest,” I said, turning to look out the window. Holly has never been the best driver in my opinion. She wrecked her first two cars because she was talking and got distracted. At least that’s what she said happened. The first one wasn’t as bad as the second. She only backed into a concrete pole going full speed in reverse. The whole back end was crushed, and we couldn’t even open the trunk. The second, well, let’s just say the parked car came out of nowhere. By the time Mom and I showed up, all the airbags were deployed and there was a distinct smell of burning rubber. Holly managed to walk away with no more than two black eyes and a sprained wrist. Because of this, I usually drove for our own safety. But today, I figured I would let her have this one. I wasn’t much in the mood to drive. Sloan was a small town located in the mid southern part of the states. The population consisted of no more than two hundred and eighty people. I was pretty sure they counted the animals in that too. We only had one gas station located next to the few stores lined in two strips down the town’s center. Our weather was mostly sunny but not hot which was due to the random rainstorms that would roll through. This was my favorite type of weather, but not so much Holly’s because she always said that it was gloomy and depressing. The sun was shining bright today as we drove to the small shopping center. Holly had not stopped talking since we left the house, but this was okay with me. It gave me time to process my thoughts without having to concentrate on continuing the conversation. The roar of our mom’s old 1992 Ford Bronco had a way of giving me a calming feeling when I heard it. Making it to the shopping center, we walked into this little boutique that had some clothes that I believed were not half bad. We split up, looking for an outfit for the night that my sister had planned.Holly was in the back of the store looking at these cheerfully colored flowy dresses, holding each one up in front of a mirror, trying to decide which ones to try on. Catching myself staring at the rack of shimmery shirts in front of me, I wondered what I could say to get
