I don’t think Blair realizes what she just offered me. The blood oath is sacred and very powerful. Some tribal couples are too afraid to take the oath. My parents took the oath, and when my father passed, my mother wanted to join him. She kept herself alive to take care of me and my sister, and she had a duty to our people as a healer. But I suspect fate has told my mother that I’m safe, so now she’s trying to move on. About four hours into the eight-hour drive, I have to stop at the nearest truck stop for gas. I can’t help but stroke Blair’s cheek before getting out of the truck. Her eyes flutter at bit, and then she looks up at me. She sits up, adjusting to the new surroundings. The bright lights of the truck station make her eyes squint. She covers her face with her hand and opens the passenger door. I hurry around the truck to help her out. “Nova,” she groans. She’s a grumpy sleeper. It may seem strange, but I love that about her. I love everything about her. “I can let myself out. You don’t have to help me with everything, honey.” I shrug and set her on her feet. It doesn’t bother me to cater to her. It’s my job as her mate. “I have to pee. I’ll grab more snacks while you get gas.” She’s scratching her head and yawning. I follow behind her because she’s not traveling through this truck stop alone. She’s trying to split up to save time, but I’d rather know that she’s back in the truck before I take care of the fuel. Blair notices me following behind her through the convenience store and into the bathroom. She’s grump with me again. “I told you to get the gas, babe. You don’t have to make sure I pee.” I smile and stand in front of her stall as she closes it. She’d better get used to this. When we are in public, I am her protector. I will watch after her even if she doesn’t like it. After she does her business, she comes out of the stall and walks over to the sink to wash her hands. I can feel her mood changing. Blair turns off the water, and I grab some paper towels. She dries her hands, then tucks a lock of hair behind her ear. She looks up at me and I can see the guilt in her eyes. “I’m sorry, I’m being bitchy.” She walks right into my arms and hugs me. “I’m not annoyed, Blair. I know you are grouchy when you wake up sometimes.” She pulls back and steps on her toes to reach me for a kiss. I smile at her effort. I’m too tall for that, but I lean down and kiss her back. Then I take her hand and walk her through the convenience store while she grabs the snacks she wants. “You’ve been driving for four hours. Would you like me to take the other shift?” she asks while grabbing a bag of chocolate covered peanuts. I shake my head. She’s not driving me anywhere. “I’ve got it.” I pull her hand to my lips, but she snatches it away. I glare at her for the reaction. “This place is disgusting. Who knows what germs are on my hands? At least let me sanitize them first.” I roll my eyes at that comment, but I don’t argue. Because I want to get her out of this damned store. My Blair looks like she wants to argue when I pay for her things, but she thinks better of it. She even allows me to carry the bag to the truck for her, probably knowing that I was going to take it from her, anyway. I help her into the truck, then go to pay for gas. After I take care of that, I’m met with Blair sitting in the driver’s seat. I open the door and glare at her. “Get in. I’ll drive for at least an hour so you can rest.” I’m not trying to hear it. I step up into the driver’s side, forcefully scooting her into the passenger seat. She seems shocked that I can lift her with little effort. “Nova!” she scowls at me. But I don’t care. I close the door and start the engine. “Blair, you are not driving. It’s my job to take care of you. Just sit back and relax.” She turns away from me angrily and folds her arms over her chest. She’s being a brat and I have an idea what I can do to fix it. I start the engine and take off down the highway. I drive for about thirty minutes until I find an exit that has a hotel. “We’re going to a hotel?” She asks me once I take the exit and follow the signs. I nod with a wide smile, because it’s the first time she’s spoken to me since we left the truck stop. “You’ll put me in a hotel before you let me drive the rest of the way. We need to get to the tribal lands to see your mother.” I appreciate her correction, but I’m taking care of her first. And I know my mother’s condition. But Blair is right, I’m tired. I need to rest to finish this trip. That, and I need to fuck Blair so she can behave again. When we arrive at the hotel, I park my truck at the valet entrance, that is now empty, and climb out. I
