If I want to stay alive and keep my parents alive, I have to continue onward. Which means I need to steal from the Donovans. The Donovan mob is the largest Irish mob in Boston. They hold a lot of sway over people. I don’t want to get mixed up with them, but here I am. I blame it on my parents—the druggies that they are. They’re so far in debt to Alessandro Romano that it’s up to me to get them out of it. I’m broke, though. I work as a waitress, but that doesn’t mean shit. Waitresses are barely paid any money, and, as I’m only twenty, I couldn’t get a job at a better restaurant serving alcohol and such. Which leaves me working in a crappy little diner, barely making ends meet. So that’s why I went to Alessandro and asked him how I was supposed to pay off my parents’ debt. Unfortunately, his only suggestion was to steal money from the Donovans. Now, here I am, standing outside their infamous club—the fighting rings. I’ve heard of this place. It’s where men go to fight while everyone else watches and gets drunk. It’s not a place I like to frequent. I was a good student growing up. My parents never forced me to get straight A’s. I just decided to get them myself. I even got into college, but it was too expensive, and the thought of burdening myself with more debt when my parents were already far into debt themselves made college a pipe dream. I’ve never been one to attend parties, do drugs, or have sex. Because my parents are such screw-ups, I felt I had to be perfect. And look where that got me. Standing outside on a cold night in a long line, waiting to get into a fighting club to steal money from an infamous mafia family. All because I don’t want to see my parents die. With each step toward the bouncer, I fight the urge to run away. I could do that. I could leave my parents on their own and let them deal with the consequences. I could slip off into the night and leave, get another waitressing job at another shitty diner and scrape by until I can live somewhere better. But that’s not the life I want. I don’t want to scrape by forever, and I especially don’t want to do that without my parents in my life. Once I reach the front of the line, the bouncer, a heavy-set guy with a bushy beard, scans me head to toe. “You look kind of young.” Shit. I need to get into this club. Alessandro told me to steal the money from here. “I’m twenty-one,” I manage to get out. While it’s a lie, I’ll be twenty-one in just a few months, so close enough. The bouncer stares intently into my eyes for the longest handful of seconds. Sweat forms in my armpits, and I think I might die from the anxiety coursing through me. Finally, he shrugs and motions me forward. “Have a fun night, cutie.” I breath out roughly as I walk past and enter the club. The instantaneous loud thumping from the bass speakers reverberates through me. The room is so loud I think my ears might pop, from the music to the sounds of men fighting to the cheering from the crowd. As I walk farther into the club, my eyes land on a huge fighting ring. Two men are inside, going toe to toe. Each is swinging punches and kicking the other. I’m shocked either is still standing. The people watching the fight are so focused on them that you’d think they were looking at Heaven before them. I’ve never seen such awe on people’s faces before. Not where I come from. The people I grew up with were always strung out and sickly. It’s a miracle I didn’t follow the same path. Granted, I’m in a fighting club that I plan to steal from, so … I guess the miserable world I grew up in is hard to escape. My gaze shifts to the bar to see an attractive bartender handing out drinks. Alessandro told me that if I flirted with the bartender enough, I could convince him to bring me to the back room where the Donovans keep a safe full of money. The problem with his plan is that I’m terrible at flirting, and I have no idea how to crack a safe. Though Alessandro gave me some ideas for the combination, so at least I have a starting point. I’m so far out of my league here. I can only hope I don’t get arrested tonight. A criminal record would make it even harder for me to start a new life. Then a dark idea passes through my mind. What if I’m killed for this? That’s an even worse idea. I strut up to the bar with my shoulders back and my head held high. If I’m going to have any chance at successfully flirting, I
