She huffs once before stomping her foot. “Ask the question, Marcus.” I pause in setting up the tent, and stare at her confused, waiting for her to say more. With a grunt, she adds, “I promised you answers, so just ask.” Looking over the halfling, I start to frown. “What are you talking about?” “Why do you make things so hard! Damn you! I’m giving you permission to ask about how halflings choose their partners.” She takes a deep breath before blowing strands of red hair out of her face. “Tallia, I’m so tired right now. Why don’t you just tell me?” Lying down on my mat, I start to close my eyes. My hopes for tonight were to spend it drama free, and with lots of sleep. Sitting next to me, she starts to frown. “No. You have to ask. That’s how this works.” Taking a deep breath, I let it out as a sigh. “How do halflings choose their partners?” I ask, finally giving in. “Very well, I’ll tell you since you asked.” She sits up straighter, proud that she got me to ask. “Halflings believe in soulmates. It’s something instinctual for us. When we find the person that our body will be the most compatible with, it floods us with hormones that establish an instant love.” I open my eyes the rest of the way and give her my full attention. “Some people in my world believed something like that was possible.” “Shush!” she says, scolding me as she places a finger up to my lips. She takes a deep breath and continues her story. “Usually, it’s not a problem, because halflings frequently stay with their own kind. Both parties feel the emotions equally as strong. It’s never one sided. That is, unless they establish with a human. We only find one person in our lives that we are compatible with. So, when it happens with humans, the human usually abuses the position. It’s a rare case when it actually works out.” She pauses so I can think over her words, and her voice gains an edge as she continues. “Now imagine growing up and hearing all the horror stories of humans abusing halflings in that position, and then finding out your compatible person is a human. I wanted to tear you apart for taking that away from me!” Anger flits over her face before she calms. “I tried to hate you; I really did. But the decision was already made for me. That’s why I started pursuing you. I just wanted to be accepted by you. Does that make sense?” I sit up as she rests her head on her chest. Pulling her into my arms, I try to reassure her. “It’s hard not to understand when you put it like that. I would never abuse you; if anything, you are the one abusing me, hitting me with that stick while we train.” Slapping my arm, she leans away to look at me. “I’m being serious here. I was really worried when we first met. I thought you were going to be like every other guy out there. How was I supposed to know you were going to be so sweet? Do you truly understand the love I have for you?” “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully understand it. What I can do is promise you that I will always love you.” I start to grin stupidly as my mind wanders to something we once talked about. Seeing her concern, I explain myself. “Now that you told me the story, you’re going to want to have sex.” “That’s where your mind went? You aren’t concerned that I bonded to you? You don’t find it weird that no matter what happens between us, I won’t be able to stop loving you? You aren’t going to push me away in disgust?” Her questions come tumbling out. Giving her a moment to breathe, I start answering. “I’m not going to push you away. If anything, I want to pull you tighter and not let you go. Why would I be disgusted? Isn’t this a natural part of being a halfling? Why wouldn’t I understand that?” She pulls herself tighter to my chest and whispers, “Thank you, Marcus. I needed to hear those words. Are you sure that you are too tired to do more?” Her question causes me to stir as she grinds into my waist. “I could be persuaded to do more. Depending on if you let me play with your tail,” I say teasingly while reaching around her back. With a smile, I wrap my hand around her tail and rub the spot just as it protrudes from her spine. Trailing my fingers along the underside of her tail earns me a moan in response. “That’s not fair. Why don’t you have
