As he wandered aimlessly along the sidewalks of downtown Seattle, he wondered how he had never suspected anything. In a matter of hours, his life had turned upside down. All his life, he’d been led to believe that he had been rejected by his own mother; that his mother had chosen his brother Niall Callaghan and Niall’s father Connor, over himself and his father Sean. But the revelations that had been made by his Uncle Connor, and confirmed by his father, had made him feel as if his whole world had collapsed around him. He had not wanted to believe his Uncle Connor at first, but his own father Sean, the very man who’d told him everything he knew about his mother and his other family, had broken down and confessed the horrible truth. Everything Ian had believed about his mother was a lie. Neither his mother Nora nor Connor were responsible for him growing up without a mother. That had happened solely because of Sean and his selfish actions. Earlier in the day, Ian, his twin brother Niall, and his Uncle Connor had landed on Sean’s doorstep in Seattle. They had all flown in their dragon forms from Caprini, a small resort town in the Pacific Northwest, to Seattle where Sean lived after Connor had revealed that him and Niall weren’t just half-brothers as he had always believed, but also fraternal twins. Ian’s first clue that everything wasn’t as it seemed had been the look on Sean’s face when he had walked into his living room and laid eyes on Connor and Niall. Instead of the anger Ian had expected, there had only been guilt on his father’s pale face. “It’s time our boys knew the truth,” Connor had said. Ian had seen the hope, the kindness, and the patience in Connor’s eyes instead of righteous rage. Sean had opened and closed his mouth several times, supporting himself heavily on the ornate chest of drawers that stood near the door of the living room. It was clear to Ian that words had deserted his father. He had finally nodded before collapsing on an armchair nearest him. Connor had then proceeded to tell the story. Nora and Connor had been hopelessly in love and had planned to spend the rest of their lives together. But then World War II broke out. Connor and Sean, who had been living in Ireland at that time, had enlisted as soldiers. When Sean had been injured, Connor had saved his life, flying him to safety. Sean, who had then been sent back home to recover, had falsely made Nora believe that Connor had died in the war. Nora, heartbroken and lonely, had accepted Sean’s companionship even though she had never loved him. Then Connor had returned. Though Nora had been overwhelmed with joy, she’d also felt guilty for getting physically intimate with Sean. But Nora, who had never stopped loving Connor, went back to him and they resumed their relationship. Connor, who had always loved his brother and had believed that Sean loved him too, was shocked to find that far from being happy about Connor’s return, Sean was sullen and angry. Soon, Connor had come to the heart-breaking realization that Sean had led Nora to believe that Connor had been killed in the war. Upon being confronted, Sean had fought with Connor, and severing all ties, had flown away in his dragon form. Nora and Connor had then gotten married, not knowing that Nora was pregnant with twins. Several months after the birth of the twins, Connor’s parents had passed away. When Sean had come for the funeral, he had seen the twins and realized that one of the twins was his son. He had returned later and taken the twin away from Nora and Connor, and away from his brother. The twin he had taken away was Ian. Iannow kicked a fire hydrant impotently and resisted the urge to uproot it and hurl it. He had wanted to ask his dad why he had done it. Why had he taken Ian away from his mother and his family? But the sordid truth had made him so furious that he had felt as if he wouldn’t be able to spend even a fraction of a second in the company of his dad. When he had stormed out of the house several hours earlier, Niall had tried to follow him, but he’d promised Niall he would return once he had calmed down sufficiently. Now, several hours later, he wasn’t certain that the fury coursing through his veins would ever lessen. He had grown up idolizing Sean; he had been proud of his dad for raising him single-handedly. Sean had been
