As she watched from across the street, the last of the patients exited the free clinic, a standalone, single-story, faded, brick building. With the establishment finally closing, she could receive treatment in private. As she emerged from the alley where the ride share had dropped her off, three men approached the clinic. The Caucasian and two Latinos sported bold tattoos on bare arms and bulges at their lower backs. She suspected they were gang members by their appearance and the shifty way their eyes darted around the dim and empty parking lot. In any case, their behavior betrayed their dubious intentions. Using a paint can, the tallest of them sprayed the security camera above the door. After jimmying the lock and opening the door, they shuffled inside the clinic, drawing their weapons. I don’t have time for this. Swearing, Storm crossed the street as the men entered the building. They were interfering with her plan to get medical care. She’d already spent two hours with a bullet in her shin. She wanted no more delays. Besides, Dr. Bryce Chambers—owner and operator of this fine, dilapidated health clinic—was her mark. He had the right mix of debt and desperation to patch her up, take cash, and not ask questions about how she ended up with a bullet in her leg. She couldn’t simply pick another clinic to invade after hours. Cautiously limping toward the clinic, she noticed through the window that the waiting room lights were off. Silently, she opened the door with its newly broken bolt. As she crept through the entry door, men’s voices reverberated from across the dim room. The gang members were demanding money. “I’ve given you everything from petty cash. We don’t have any more than that, and we don’t stock any narcotics at the clinic.” The deep voice with a hint of Texan twang must have belonged to the physician. His tone was firm, laced with more irritation than fear. “This is an indigent care clinic. People pay what they can, which is usually nothing. No, don’t take supplies. You’re stealing from patients in this community. Your community.” Storm crept around the short entry wall to see the receptionist’s desk. One gang member pointed a gun at Dr. Chambers.
