It was stinging cold but that was not an excuse not to dress well. Wearing my favorite skin tight jeans and high heeled boots, I felt like a million dollars. Which was a good thing because my bank account was close to zero. Ethan, my six-year-old son, and I were surviving on the little money I’d saved back in Rogers and now, this job at the grocery store. “Be careful out there, Savannah,” Heather said, with a wave. I grinned. “I will.” While a lot of people only saw the disadvantages of my job, for me, it was perfect. I could pick my hours, which meant that when Ethan started his new school next week, I would be able to pick him up and drop him off. I only had two deliveries but both were up in the mountains. I packed up the two deliveries in my minivan or rather my Aunt May’s, and went to the driver’s side. Sliding into the driver’s seat, I said a silent thank you to my Aunt May. She was my mother’s younger sister and my favorite relative. I felt a familiar stinging in my eyes and pushed the feeling back down. I had promised myself not to cry again. I’d cried enough. Aunt May would not like it. After typing the first address into maps on my phone, I turned the ignition key and the van roared to life. Ten minutes later, I was out of town and headed up the twisting road up the mountain. Thank God it was wide and even though the weather had been terrible, today it was mild. My phone rang from the dashboard. A glance at the screen and my heart skipped a beat. It was my sister Ivy. Ethan. My chest tightened as I pulled over to the side of the road. I grabbed the phone and touched the screen to answer. “Hey Ivy.” My voice was deceivingly casual, hiding the fear coursing through me. I resisted the urge to blurt out if Ethan was okay. “Hi,” Ivy said cheerfully. I squeezed my eyes shut with a surge of relief. She would not be this cheerful if there was anything wrong. “I’m home today and I thought I would check up on you,” she said. “We spoke last night,” I reminded her, though she didn’t need any reminding. “I’m good, busy at work. How are the kids?” “Good, they’re upstairs in the games room.” Ivy’s house was huge but she and her husband ran their own law firm in Rogers, Montana. “Great,” I continued. “I’ll call you guys in the evening, okay?” “Are you sure you’re okay?” she asked, “I can send you something to tide you over.” “I’m fine, thanks.” I hated to ask for help from my family and she was already doing enough keeping Ethan while I settled into our new lives here in Paradise. We hung up and I continued my drive. Google maps told me to take the next left. I thanked God for technology. I was fine with a voice on my phone telling me which direction to go, but if you gave me a physical map, I was lost. I took another left turn and followed the driveway that cut through a well taken care of lawn. Coming to a stop in front of a neat single-family home, I cut the engine and went to the back to grab the crate. I carried it to the house and gently deposited it at the front door. Before I could ring the bell, heavy footsteps sounded and a second later, the door swung open. “Hello. You must be the new delivery lady,” an elderly woman said, a smile on her face. “I am,” I said, smiling back. “Do you want me to carry these in for you?” The instructions were to leave the delivery at the front door but there was no way I was leaving the heavy crate for her to carry. “Yes please, that would be lovely,” she said, holding the door open for
