It amuses me as Joshua writhes in pain. Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved seeing others get hurt. Call me a psychopath, but it’s true. I keep the knife in. Joshua can’t bleed out. That would defeat the purpose of this torture session. I need him alive to answer a few questions. “Where did you hide the money you stole from Mr. Antonov?” I ask, digging the knife in deeper. The scream that erupts from Joshua’s mouth sends a tingle over me, making me want to fuck a woman. Pain pleases me. “Please, let me go.” Snot drips from his nose as he cries harder. He’s strapped to a chair, so he can’t move his body or get away from me. That’s how I like it. We’re in an old dusty house where I do most of my job. I’m the Bratva’s torturer. Meaning I’m the one who inflicts pain on those who mess up, whether by not paying the money they owe Mr. Antonov or by having delusions of grandeur and staging attacks on Mr. Antonov’s business. I’m the one Mr. Antonov calls to handle everything. I’m also his new second in command. To most people, Mr. Antonov is the scary, intimidating mafia boss. But to me, he’s just Alek—my friend. I became his second in command after his previous one tried to kill him. I love the perks it provides me. More money, more women, and more chances to torture people. Even though I have new duties to perform as second in command, Alek still likes to send me to hurt people who fuck up since I’m the best at it. Even Alek, who’s feared all over New York, doesn’t relish hurting others as I do. I don’t think of it as a sickness. I see it as a gift. It’s rewarded me with the opportunity to have a good job. To stand at the side of the most powerful man in New York City. I have almost as much power as Alek, and many people know my horrifying reputation. Once people see me, they know they’re fucked. And right now, that’s Joshua. He tried stealing from Alek, and now, I’m here, fixing the situation. “I’m not going to let you go,” I tell him. “Not until you tell me where you hid the money.” “Please,” he moans. “If you tell me where the money is, I’ll let you go.” “You’re just going to kill me.” I sigh as I take a step back. “That’s not true.” And I hate that it’s not true. Alek used to have no issue with me killing people, but now that he’s married with a baby, he’s gotten softer. He’s still a hard-ass most of the time, but he’s implemented a new rule—if someone doesn’t need to die, then show them mercy. It’s a rule that I’ve struggled with, but I respect my boss, and I’ll do as he says, even if I have to bite my tongue as I do it. “I’m not going to kill you,” I say. “I’ll let you go if you tell me where the money is. But if you don’t …” I trail off. I find it’s usually better to let people imagine what you’d do to them. Most imagine something far worse than reality. Joshua strains against the rope tied around his wrists and ankles. “I can’t tell you. Just kill me if you have to.” “Ok, then.” I grab my torture kit—something I’ve collected over the years and one of my most prized possessions. I take out a small stick. Joshua frowns. “What are you doing with that?” “If you just tell me where the money is, I wouldn’t have to do this.” I grab his hand and place the stick under the tip of his fingernail. “This is really going to hurt.” Then I push the stick forward so it jams under his nail. The wail that escapes him is filled with pure pain. It’s music to my ears. Joshua writhes harder as he pants and screams. My heartbeat is steady as I dig in the stick in so far that his nail starts to lift up. “This is your decision, Joshua. Either tell me where the money is, or I’ll continue to hurt you. And then I’ll go after your wife and children. Because you know I will. If you want to protect them, then tell me where you’re hiding the money.” In an instant, I’ve torn his nail clean off. The place where his nail once was is bleeding. “Oh god! Please! Please stop.” He slumps forward. “Ok. I will.” I remove the stick and wipe the blood away before placing it back in my kit. “Do you want to tell me where the money is?” I grab the back of his head and make him look at me. He’s covered in sweat. “I’m doing this for my wife and children. That money is meant to protect them.” “But I’m going to hurt them anyway, so is it really helping anyone? If you give the money back to Mr. Antonov, no more harm will come to you.
