ABOUT THE AUTHOR CHAPTER ONE The beating rain seemed to force the man and woman to keep pace with its steady rhythm. They’d driven their broken-down vehicle toward the small fishing village on the East Coast, following the Taedong River. They were told to be there by midnight, or the captain would leave. They nervously passed darkened warehouses and businesses, feeling more at ease with the sight of small homes coming into view and finally, the village. In the backseat, lying covered with his favorite blanket, their only son. His thick black hair had fallen into his eyes, and his mother reached back, brushing it aside. His sweet innocent face was restful, showing no signs of the turmoil and hatred surrounding his world. “He won’t remember us,” she whispered to her husband. “He won’t remember our voices, or the songs I have sung to him, or the toys you have made. He’ll remember nothing of us at all.” “It’s the only way for him to have a life. They’ll come for us for what we’ve done. You know that. We’ve been too vocal. I should have sent both of you away sooner.” “We couldn’t just sit by and watch what they’re doing to our people,” she said, touching his arm.
