There are two main reasons people write stories. The first is to provide an escape for the reader from their everyday lives, to venture into an appealing fantasy, where the hero serves as a proxy for the reader to indulge in adventures, where they get to feel smart, powerful, brave, sexy, or all of the above. The second reason is to use a fictional scenario to hold up a mirror to real life, to explain moral or philosophical truths in a way that gets past an audience’s normal defenses against being lectured. Most stories are a combination of the above, containing both morals and escapism. In fact, we’re so used to it that a lot of people assume that all stories function like this. That doesn’t mean the authors of those tales approve of these actions or want to experience them in real life. What it means is that sometimes, an immoral sexual fantasy can be a lot more compelling and exciting than a moral one. These fantasies are pure escapism, and enjoying these types of daydreams is normal and healthy, provided that it’s done with the understanding that they need to remain in the realm of fantasy. It’s a way to explore one’s desires in a safe environment, and to allow readers to do the same. This book is, first and foremost, an escapist, indulgent, erotic novel. It’s the literary equivalent of a hot fudge sundae. I can’t claim that it’s completely free of morality, because my heroes are mostly moral people, and they will comment on ethical issues as they come up. My villains, on the other hand, don’t give a fuck, and they will engage in all sorts of nasty, immoral sex. And these acts
