Chapter One – Jesse Jesse sat outside the maternity ward of the hospital in Bear Bluff, his senses on high alert as he listened for the first cries of a newborn child. Not his child. A pang of longing speared his chest. Oh, how he wished that one day he would be lucky enough to stand by his mate’s side while she gave birth to their child. A child he would protect and nurture for the rest of his life. I hear it! A wave of exhilaration surged through Jesse’s body as the bear’s excitement seemed to flow into his veins. I do, too. Jesse’s sadness faded away as he stood up abruptly, earning himself a reproving look from a nurse who was passing by, supporting an elderly patient on her arm. Jesse sank back down onto the seat and gripped the rigid edges, digging his fingernails into the hard plastic as he breathed out his pent-up anxiety. Anxiety that had been building in him since he’d raced to the hospital with Kay and Curtis two or three hours ago. It was over. They were okay. Although Jesse didn’t plan on leaving the hospital until he’d spoken to Curtis. And seen the baby, his bear added. His bear, who was just as excited as the human side of Jesse at the prospect of a new baby. His bear who planned to shower the child with love. Finally, Curtis emerged from the delivery room, his face beaming with pride. “It’s a girl!” he announced, holding up a small bundle in his arms. Jesse’s eyes widened as he caught sight of the tiny baby wrapped in a soft blanket. He was filled with a strong desire to protect his child, even though Curtis was more than capable of protecting her himself. But it was part of Jesse’s DNA. A force he could not deny, and Jesse wished only to protect this vulnerable child from hurt and keep her safe. Like a knight in shining armor, his bear mused happily. Curtis glanced up at Jesse, a dazzling smile stretching across his face that would have been enough to light up any night sky. However, his smile dimmed slightly when Curtis saw the expression of longing on Jesse’s face. “Don’t worry, Jesse. You’ll have a child of your own one day,” he said. But Jesse’s heart sank at his friend’s words. He ached to have the family he’d been dreaming of, but after years of searching, Jesse’s one true love seemed like an elusive fantasy. His hopes of that ever happening were slowly slipping away. Soon he’d be ready to give up the idea of finding her...the one who would complete him...and accept a life alone. Yes, he was starting to come to terms with the fact that his dreams might never come true. We must never let go of that dream, his bear ground out. “Here, Kay made me promise to let you hold her.” As Curtis handed the baby to him, a wave of emotion washed over Jesse. The weight of the tiny body in his arms, the softness of the blankets, the scent of newness all around him, ignited a sense of longing and hope that would never be quashed. “I can’t wait to see her grow up,” Jesse cooed, looking down at the baby’s sweet face. “She is adorable. Yes, you are.” Jesse rocked her back and forth as he stared into her clear eyes. It was like she was staring right back at him. And looking into the depths of his soul with eyes as old as
