Chapter 1 - Amelia I might have been an orphan and a nobody, but I wasn’t stupid, and I was pretty sure that going with a wizard to a magic market at the edge of the Fae Lands was playing with fire. “I just need to buy some new materials for the shop, nothing weird.” The wizard said, pottering around the shelves and making space for whatever he was going to buy. His shop wasn’t that big of a deal, but this wizard had the hopes of someday making a name for himself, or so he’d told me. “Then go by yourself,” I said to his back. I had nothing against people who thought they could achieve greatness. Gods knew I’d wanted that for myself before I’d been shown the cold hard truth—orphans from tiny towns didn’t get to become great and distinguished people. It was just the way it was. But still, I wasn’t willing to get killed. I didn’t know if he was just pretending not to care or if this really was such a small deal. “But I need some help to bring everything back. You don’t expect me to carry so many bags all by myself, do you?” Gods, he wasn’t that old. Joseph looked middle-aged, with bushy eyebrows, salt and pepper hair, and in relatively good shape for his age, even if he was rather thin-framed (which made sense, since he spent the majority of the day hunched over his desk). I wouldn’t bend that easily. “And you expect me to be able to carry them?” “Oh, you’re young, and it’s only from the next town over, we’ll be gone only for half a day.” He said. People distrusted wizards for a reason, and as much as I’d been desperate enough to accept a job with him temporarily, it didn’t mean I wasn’t a bit wary of him. His voice sounded light, but I wasn’t convinced. My face must have conveyed this, since he rolled his eyes and said “Fine. I’ll pay you three extra golds for your trouble.” Three extra golds? Either this man-wizard was trying to get me killed or these herbs were some really good stuff. I could do so many things with three extra golds. I might have enough to leave my job with Old Janet and look for something else. I might even get my own room elsewhere. To say that it was a tempting offer was an understatement. That I would be better off not going…was also true. “Are these herbs that good?” “They are, my dear. Worst of all, the merchants that sell them only come once a year, so it really needs to be now that we go.” He looked at me, studying my expression with furrowed wild brows. “So, will you do it?” I’d be damned, but I was going to. I knew I shouldn’t do it. I really didn’t think I was walking into my death, but everyone with some sense in this town would tell you not to go to Ather unless absolutely necessary. Although it was a human settlement under the watch of the Human King, the Fae Lands were no joke. Since this town was at the edge, there were markets where wizards—who came and went from our territory to the Fae Lands as they wished, if they had a permit—, Fae people and even the eventual Demon converged with humans. I apparently had very few survival instincts, because the thought of all these different peoples coming together had always fascinated me. I’d read stories about the alluring Fae, their strange traditions and foods, and most especially, I’d read all about the demise that awaited the human that dared deal with them. Bargains with the Fae were two-sided coins. You got something you really wanted, but you’d also end up paying more than you expected.
