I was slumped over the counter, barely propping my head up on my limp wrists. Gravity felt stronger as the afternoon dragged on. “You are scaring customers away.” “I’m sorry,” I managed before another cascade of tears fell from my eyes. “Oh honey, you are really hurting, aren’t you?” Michelle came to the back of the counter and wrapped her soft, strong, arms around me. She provided comfort and solace when I didn’t have anyone else who cared a thing about me. I pressed my face into the crook of her neck and clutched her arms as I bawled with the pain of a thousand years. She stroked my hair and made other comforting sounds before she began ordering the rest of her crew around. “Josh, don’t worry about those dishes, I need you running the front counter.” “But…” I could hear the conversation around me. It didn’t mean I could stop sobbing or could pay much attention to it. Michelle held me for a really long time. At one point I think she was even talking to a customer when she said something about sometimes you just need a mom’s hug. I didn’t have a mom, at least not anymore. Michelle was now my mom. She said she adopted me when I started to work for her, and she learned my story. Actual mom or not, her hugs were the best. Even when my heart was shattering and being ground to dust, I needed her support. Any other boss would have told me to get my shit together and go back to work. Or they would have put me in the kitchen to wash dishes so no one could see me. I didn’t even want to think about the possibility of being fired over this. That of course, would just be the icing on the cake of my week. Gradually, Michelle got me to move into the back. Niagara Falls continued to gush from my eye holes. That’s all they were to me at this point, holes where my eyes should have been. I couldn’t see, I was crying too much. She brought me a glass of water. I struggled to sip it around my gulps for air. “I’m sorry,” I finally managed to say. “Grief sometimes hits you unexpectedly like that. It happens.” “Grief?” “Heartbreak is grief.
