Missed them again. It was galling. The most provoking part, of course, was he had only missed them because of that fool of a magistrate. If he’d just come when he’d sent the letter— “A brandy, Your Grace?” asked his butler quietly. Byron glared, but his expression softened when he saw the nerves on his servant’s face. It wasn’t his fault the Glasshand Gang hadn’t been apprehended—again—as they robbed another mail coach. It wasn’t his own fault either, but that was beside the point. His butler hadn’t been attempting to chase them down for the last eighteen months. “Yes,” he said heavily. “And a pipe. And something from the kitchen—” “Cook has already started plating up what should have been tonight’s dinner, Your Grace,” murmured Wilson. Byron shot him a look, but there didn’t seem to be any insolence in his servant’s gaze, so he said nothing. He had missed dinner. And luncheon, now he came to think of it, Byron remembered as he placed a hand on his growling stomach. “I would like to ask a question, if I may, Your Grace,” said Wilson delicately. Byron looked up. His butler had been with him ten years—at least, with the family for ten years. There was a certain tone the man had when he was going to obliquely suggest something he knew would be taken ill from any other servant.
