Mumbling an apology under my breath, I step away from everyone. After calming down, I ask Lauren if she is pulling a prank on me. “I’m sorry. I wish I could be there. I thought you said you were coming in tomorrow.” she informs me. “I told you today,” I bite out, frustration building in my chest. “I’m sorry about the mix-up. I had to go to Blackmore for Lilly’s baby shower.” “Of course,” I whisper as I face-palm. This isn’t our plan. It has been a whirlwind since I caught Anthony with his secretary, which shattered my world. Until now, I’m still trying to understand why he did something so despicable to me. Two years down the drain. I guess love and happily ever after aren’t for everyone; Anthony has taught me that lesson the hard way. It wasn't easy living in the same city as Anthony after that. So, I decided to leave Texas. Thankfully, the job at Arlex sealed my fate to come to South Pasadena. It was an opportunity for a fresh start after breaking off my engagement. This time, I’ll get it right! I’ll never put myself in a vulnerable position again. Of course, my parents weren’t too happy that I left Texas, but they always support me. That I am grateful for. Since I made my decision, it has been a whirlwind of preparation between Lauren and me. We have been friends since my freshman year of college. She was excited when I told her about my new job in South Pasadena. Without much prompting, she started apartment hunting for me while I wrangled up moving accommodations cross country. Luckily, she found an apartment in the same complex that she’s in. Lauren had offered for me to live with her, but she lives with her dad, and I wasn’t too comfortable with that. I didn’t want to inconvenience either of them. I wanted to be on my own. “I’m sorry, love. I promise I’ll make it up to you,” she says. I sigh, letting the anger go. I know she truly mixed up the dates. She wouldn’t leave me here alone. “What do I do now?” “I can give you my home address,” she offers. “No, no. I’m not too comfortable with that.” “What about a hotel?” “That sounds better. Any recommendations?” I start gathering my bags from the airport bench. “Relatives usually stay at the South Pasadena Inn and Suites. They find it comfortable.” I nod, accepting that this is my new destination. “Thank you. When will you be back? Remember, my movers are supposed to arrive tomorrow.” I hike my backpack up on my shoulder and head for the taxi lineup. “I’ll be back first thing tomorrow morning — no worries,” she says to my utter relief. “You better start thinking of a way to make it up to me,” I tease. Lauren laughs on the other end. “I’ll take you out on a date night. How does that sound?” I chuckle. “You better pick me up, too.” Once outside, I pause, waiting to finish my conversation with Lauren before calling a taxi. “I will, will.” “Good. I gotta go. I’ll text you when I get to the hotel.” We say our goodbyes and I hang up the phone, stuffing it into the back pocket of my jeans. I drag my suite case to the taxi directly in front of me. “Where d’ya need to go?” the man asks. I give him the name of the hotel. “’ight, get in.” I open the back seat door, toss my luggage in, and pile in after it. The taxi driver puts the car in drive and we head off. A half-hour later we pull up to a hotel perched on a block corner. Its beige exterior is not so different from hotels back in Texas. “Forty-two fifty.” I balk at the man as he eyes me from the rearview mirror. I quickly shake my head to clear my thoughts. “Do you accept card?” Without saying a word, the driver extends a card reader over the back seat. I insert my card, watch as his tablet processes my payment, and sigh when I see the green check mark across the screen. I remove my card and scramble out of the backseat. The air here is similar to what I’m used to: hot and dry. I secure my backpack and begin my trek inside. “Here goes nothing,” I mutter as I walk out the front entrance of the hotel, into the cooling evening. Four hours have passed since I checked into the hotel. I
