His boots dug in the sand as he pushed the boat into the water, his brother Troy right beside him. The agitated waves hissed and seethed against the shoreline, and the sky was blood red as the sun rose. Had it been left to Tommy, he would have turned back right then, but Troy was hellbent on launching the boat. There was nothing Troy liked more than spending a day on the water. Besides, Tommy had promised to go with him, and there were few things worse than a person who broke his promises. "Push, man!" Troy said. At fourteen, Troy was two years older than Tommy, and his body showed it. He was already starting to grow a hint of a mustache, and his shoulders were broad and strong. Tommy, by contrast, was pale, bald-faced, and scrawny—the "runt of the litter" as his father called him. Troy was Tommy's idol, and he didn't like to disappoint him. Still, there was that red sky … "I am pushing," he said, grunting with the effort, "but should we really be doing this? I think a storm might be coming." "A storm?" Troy's voice was harsh and mocking. "Really, you're afraid of a little storm? What's the matter, worried you might get wet?" "It's not that. I'm just saying that it seems to be getting worse, not better." "Not better?" Troy laughed. "Come on, what's the fun of fishing if you're not in a little danger? Where's your sense of adventure?" Tommy said nothing. The only reason he liked going out on the boat was to think and enjoy the quiet, watching the fish dart about beneath the water. Troy, on the other hand, was always on a mission. If he didn't catch a good-sized fish (as well as miss one he inevitably claimed had been as big as Tommy), it wasn't a good day, storm or no storm.
