They had promised a cure, and initially, their methods saved people, or so the public thought. Fearing disease and death, those that survived willingly took the cure. But they hadn’t been given a cure; they’d been unwilling test subjects for a bio-weapon which caused more deaths and illnesses, making them dependent on BHF’s health protocols. By the time the truth had been revealed, it was already too late. BHF had become the new regime. They toppled governments, dismantled military forces worldwide, and controlled health care, power grids, law enforcement, plus food production and distribution. They had complete control. Those who had refused to live under BHF’s rule became known as the Rebels. They rose against BHF, living on the outskirts of major cities, governing themselves, and doing everything they could to survive and avoid becoming slaves to the new world order. Hiding amongst the population were the Gifted Pure Bloods. Individuals with supernatural powers and immunity to the plague. BHF wanted world domination. The Rebels wanted freedom. And Pure Bloods had the power to tip the scale…if they would only reveal themselves and choose a side. CHAPTER ONE Elyanna The open road had become a comforting reminder that I was living according to my terms. I was free. Well, as free as a Pure Blood like myself could be. The Better Health Federation had eyes everywhere since it’d taken over in the aftermath of the silent plague. I’d never be safe. But I’d survived BHF’s draconian regime for years and managed to stay under their radar and would continue to do so. I had a mission to take out the man in charge of the research and development department who’d started this mess in the first place, then I’d make him and his lackeys pay for their mistakes. The steady vibration against my thighs continued as I drove cross-country to my target location. The wind whipped past me as I got farther and farther away from the citadel. It had taken longer than expected to gather the information I needed. Years, to be exact, but now, I had a general location. It would take several days to get to the Pacific Northwest, even driving at top speed on my Ducati. It’s okay, El, be patient, I had to remind myself. My musings had distracted me, and I almost missed it. I eased off the throttle, cleared my thoughts, and reached out with my gift. Gotcha! There were two of them—no three—a half mile up the road. Rebels. Damnit. I hated taking down Rebels. We were on the same side, after all. As I got closer, their thoughts told me everything I needed to know, and their intentions weren’t friendly. Hurry, set the trap. I can hear them getting closer. We should wait. What if we’re outnumbered? That’s what the tripwire is for. It will puncture the tires while we hide. Once the car is disabled, you can use your gun to rob them. Quick, run this to the other side of the road. Maggie, don’t just stand there. Hide! Well, shit. Using my gifts made it easy for me to deal with people like this, but I tried not to use them
