But how could I have avoided it? She died, and still I yearned. Still craved her scent and ached for her touch. That wasn’t me. I didn’t need someone to make my twisted heart bloody sing. Until Roslyn let me have her blood. She changed something within me. Woke a long dormant beast, and now I’d never be free of it—of her. Like a dragon who’d found the most beautiful jewel, I wanted to keep her protected and never let another threaten my treasure. And she was mine. Even if she allowed others to touch her. It wouldn’t erase my claim. I got there first. I had her before any of them. “G-Gavin . . .” Roslyn’s eyes were wide, the stain of arousal leaching from her cheeks. “Is this any way for a duchess to behave, Mrs. Donoghue?” I strode deeper into the bar, forcing myself to stay cool and collected. It was a herculean task with the way that Mercer arsehole was holding on to my wife. “I’m not a duchess.” Oh, how little you understand, petal. “Oh, but you are. It seems someone had been slowly poisoning my father with colloidal silver. By the time we discovered it, there was nothing for it. He slipped away only a few weeks after your tragic demise.” “Wait, this fucker is your husband?” Remington snarled as he held her closer. “No.” “Yes.” I spoke over her, loud and strong. “Well, which is it? Because it looks a lot like she doesn’t want you, buddy.” He turned her around to face him, one palm cupping her jaw. “Is this who you were running from, baby girl? Just say the word, and I’ll get rid of him for you.” “You could bloody well try.” “You’ve seen what I can do, Dracula. Don’t think I can’t take you.” I cocked a brow. “Yes, but you haven’t seen what I can do.” “What are you talking about? You two know each other?” Roslyn tore herself from his grasp. “You . . . you knew about Gavin?” “Yes, please. Explain to my wife how we know each other, Remington.” I can’t wait to see how you’re going to get out of this one, Mercer. “What’s he talking about, Remi?” I loved the accusation in her tone. The uncertainty. That little spark of fear. The wolf’s jaw clenched, his eyes flashing with anger before glancing down at Roslyn. “Oh my God. Is he your”—she looked at me then back at him—“were you two . . .” She had to lower her voice before she could manage, “together?” “Fuck no! God, nothing like that. I would never lower myself to fucking a vampire.” “First of all, I would be the one doing the fucking, so you meant to say you wouldn’t lower yourself to being fucked by a vampire. Secondly, you would be so lucky to find yourself under my whip, Mercer. And you know I’d make you beg for it until you were weeping. Don’t act coy. I’ve seen the way your face lights up when you watch me perform at Iniquity.” I had no interest in the wolf, but I couldn’t help goading him after that insult. Let my wife chew on that little morsel. The way Roslyn’s breath hitched had me wondering if her reaction was because of his harsh words or the image mine had conjured. I hoped for the latter. “Why are you here, Gavin?” she asked, her sweet voice stronger than I’d ever heard it. “You know exactly why, darling. I’m here to reclaim my wayward wife. The one who left me a shattered man when she . . . died.” She sucked in a breath. “Don’t toy with me. You weren’t shattered. It was an arrangement, nothing more.” All playfulness left me. “You know that’s not true.” “Do I? In some circles, an unconsummated
