I hated when they did that. They had twin speak. They could have an entire conversation without ever opening their mouths. I was used to it, but it annoyed me at times. “Orchids are expensive,” Julia said. “I don’t care.” I shrugged. “I think they’re pretty. And very classy.” “Classy is expensive.” “Fine,” I said. “Dumb, old roses it is. I wanted something different.” “Sweetie, your wedding is in three weeks,” Lena reminded me. “You would need to order orchids. I don’t think it’ll be too hard to find roses. I’m assuming you want white?” “Duh.” I flipped the page. “I still haven’t decided on a song. Should it be something super sappy or maybe a little upbeat?” “Do you even know the meaning of sappy?” Lena laughed quietly. Her twins were asleep, and we did not want to wake them up. “This is my wedding,” I reminded them. “I can do a little sappy.” “You want a song you can dance to,” Lena said. “Something that’s timeless.” “I don’t really know any love songs,” I said. “Freddie told me to pick the song. He listens to rap and I’ll be damned if I shake my ass to some rap song. I’m torn between something traditional and something unique to the two of us.” “Is there a song that makes you think of him?” Lena asked. “I know I have plenty that make me think of Sean.” I thought about it. I wasn’t really that kind of a person. I didn’t do the sentimental thing. But I would like to have some traditional elements. I didn’t want to regret not picking a special song or creating moments I could look back on when we were old and gray. I was wild now, but it wouldn’t be like that forever. I would never be demure or too calm, but settled. Definitely settled. When we had children, I had to be a good example. If God saw fit to give me girls, I knew I did not want them to be like me. Somewhat like me, but I didn’t want to go gray because I raised a heathen like myself. “I don’t know,” I replied. “There was a rock ballad we made out to at a club. I don’t remember what it was though. Maybe if I heard it, I would remember.” “Do you remember the words?” Julia asked. “Not so much. I was a little preoccupied.” “With Freddie’s tongue down your throat.” Lena laughed. “Exactly,” I nodded. “Give me a song and I’ll use it.” “That’s not how it works,” Lena said. “It has to speak to you. It can be the lyrics or the voice.” “Or that it was playing when you and Freddie were together,” Julia added. “Seriously, guys, he listens to rap all the time,” I said. “You know that.” “Could there be a good rap song?” Julia asked. “For my wedding dance?” I asked in horror. “Definitely not.” “How about a Drake song? His music is very sexy.” Lena acted like she’d just solved world hunger. I groaned. “I’m just going to Google it. I’ll find a good song.” “And what about your wedding night attire?” Julia grinned. “I bet she’ll wear some kind of leather,” Lena joked. “Oh, that’s not a bad idea.” I waggled my eyebrows. “Leather and lace is always in style.” Lena rolled her eyes. “You would be the one to wear leather to your wedding.” “Freddie would like it. He likes me in anything—or nothing.” “Can you believe it?” Julia sighed. “Soon, we’re all going to be old married ladies.” “Speak for yourself,” I scoffed. “I’m not going to be old. I’m going to be the cool mom. No minivans for me. My kids are going to be rough and tumble. Little badasses.” “Because that’s what the world needs,” Lena groaned. “More Carolines.” “Mixed with Freddie,” Julia added. “Super badasses.” I laughed. “Do you know what shoes you’re going to wear, yet?” Lena asked. “I’m thinking sparkly,” I replied. “And strappy. And high. I want to blow Freddie’s mind when I walk down that aisle. He’s going to look at me and think about getting me home and naked.” “I’m sure every man at your wedding is going to be thinking that, given that dress you’re wearing,” Lena replied. “Except our men,” Julia quickly chimed in. “Your men are safe from me,” I said. “I prefer a man who gets his hands dirty. Gritty and determined and sweaty. I’m not into the suits.” “Girl, you have no idea how gritty and sweaty my man gets,” Julia defended. “Trust me, no one is complaining about our sex life.” “Do you guys ever wish you would have waited to sleep with your men before you committed to them?” I asked thoughtfully. I flipped another page to find bridal advice about veils. “Why?” Lena asked. “I was just thinking, it might be nice to have the wedding night be extra special” “Freddie and I are holding off.” “Holding off?” Lena questioned. “Again? I thought you were back to having sex. You two are so weird. I don’t know how you live together and not have sex.” “We haven’t had sex in a couple of weeks,” I said. “I think he’s hoping
