Every time I deviated from my jeans and shirt combo, I regretted it. Squinting to see through the dim lighting, I signaled to grab the bartender’s attention. In this fancy, upscale lounge, I felt a little out of place. All these expensive-looking outfits and nouveau rich people made me feel like a broke college student that had snuck in. “Whiskey neat, please.” I smiled at the bartender, and when he threw a sleazy wink back at me, any spark I had felt toward him went out in a second. He probably thought I was drooling over him—which I was, but he didn’t need to know that. “I can’t enjoy my drink?” I bit back, and maybe that was enough to make him think I was not just some young dumb girl fawning over the absolute Greek god in a leather jacket next to me. “Can’t have shit in this city,” I murmured, tracing circles around the rim of my glass. Truth be told, I didn't even like whiskey. I just needed something to get me going. He chuckled and shifted his bar stool to face me fully. His shoulders blocked out everyone behind him, and his piercing gaze burned right through my chiffon blouse. “Why are you here?” he asked, his expression so smug I wanted to reach out and wipe it off his stupid, perfect face.
