Rage couldn’t describe the amount of seething anger that boiled my body like the hot desert sands in the middle of summer. Guards flinched as their gazes were drawn to my body as I slithered toward my council chambers. The cool marble stone couldn’t cool the heat radiating from my scales. They, too, were aware of the difficulties that lay ahead of us, with our neighbors’ recent acquisition of females leaving my territory with barely enough to keep my males interested. I needed to persuade the current females in my territory to stay, but I was at a loss for how to do so. There was only so much pampering they were willing to accept before safety became a concern. It was then that they decided to move to another kingdom with a larger population—or become warriors in my mother’s female-only army. As I entered the room, I noticed the females huddled together, fear and uncertainty written all over their faces. I took a deep breath and tried to control my rage, knowing that exploding would only make matters worse. “Females,” I began, trying hard to keep my voice steady. “I understand that you may be concerned about your future in my territory, but I can assure you that you will be safe and well taken care of.” They looked at me skeptically, and I could see it in their eyes, even those who were mated to my guards who had been faithful to me since the day I took over my kingdom and transformed it into what it was today. I needed to do something to gain the trust of the others, to demonstrate to them that they were valuable to me and that I was not like the other naga princes who gathered females as mere possessions. That I wasn’t going to let my brothers overstep their boundaries and endanger my people—even if it meant killing them for daring to slither within my lands without authorization. “My Lord, what are we going to do?” Sahka asked. Until I found someone suitable to be my princess, she was the temporary female leader of my den who was also mated with one of my guards. “The females who came before you are loyal to you and your vision, and we don’t want to leave our dens, where we’ve built our nests and intend to raise our hatchlings—” “But our sisters left for other kingdoms, and our daughters joined the royal army, leaving us with our brothers and sons,” Ormra explained, slithering beside Sahka and nodding to her. “What can we do to persuade those who remain to stay?” “We border the Calyzis, with whom we have a trade agreement, which my brothers refuse to entertain, with their archaic beliefs that we should close our borders and become as self-sufficient as we once were.” “But you don’t have a princess,” Sahka countered, slithering in front of the other females as if to protect them from my brewing wrath. “If you can’t tame a female and persuade her to stay by your side, how will you care for the rest of us?” “Who said I couldn’t please a woman?” I spat, unable to believe that this was the only reason females were fleeing my kingdom. “Just because I haven’t claimed one does not mean I haven’t been interested. My ability to lead a kingdom should not be determined by my ability to keep a female satisfied in my nest.” “But it would help,” Sahka hedged, exposing her neck as a sign of submission, to show where my guard Cykzo’s marks were, the area still red from the freshness of her recent bite. “Having an unmated prince as a leader is concerning for some, especially since your brothers and cousins have been actively seeking a mate, with a few settling down.” I understood what she was saying between the hidden lines. If I wanted my kingdom to be appealing to females, I needed to find a mate before my relatives did, which would only put me that much behind them. The only problem was that none of the eligible females I’d seen while surveying my kingdom caught my eye, and no one in my chamber made my tail rattle. They were beautiful and respectful, but they lacked the fire in their eyes that warrior females had, wanting to defend what was rightfully theirs from their enemies. I needed a female by my side who was willing to bite and slice anyone who tried to attack our clan, especially once we had hatchlings. “How do you propose I find someone interested, worthy enough to be mine?” Holding my hands behind my back, I moved around them, eying their unique scale patterns and coloring, admiring their taste in lace clothing and jewels as indicators of their high-born status within my kingdom.
