Laney, Darius, Reed, and Cade were left in a perilous situation and what happens next definitely needs a warning. As well as there being a taboo nature with the relationships between Laney and her men, in this book you will find scenes of assault and non-con, including with a weapon. There are also scenes of choking, cock-warming, DP, and other violent and emotional moments. If this is something you struggle with reading, then perhaps imagine they’ve already made it to safety, and have got their HEA. But if you love all things dark and twisted, keep reading. Marissa. I’d thought the moment when our plane went down, and I’d believed we were all about to die, was the most terrifying of my life, but now I’m questioning everything. Two armed men have emerged from the forest. One is a match for Cade, size-wise. He has a broad nose, the bridge flattened as though it’s been broken a few too many times. His head is shaved, so only a shadow of growth shows through his scalp. The other man is smaller, and slight, with brown eyes that have a dark glint to them. He has cheekbones you could slice cheese on and a thin mouth that hints at cruelty. Everything seems to fall into sharp contrast. For the first time, I notice how the leaves on the trees have started to change color, the chlorophyll they contain breaking down and revealing the yellows, oranges and reds that the green has hidden all summer. The lullaby of the river that’s accompanied us through not only our hike to this spot, but most of our time here, suddenly grows too loud, filling my ears and head. The brightest color of all is the vivid red seeping from Cade’s hairline and running down his forehead and into his eyebrow. He lies motionless on the ground. Did the blow from the gun crack his skull? An injury like that could be life threatening, and it’s not as though we can call for help all the way out here. Terror fills me at the possibility he might be dead. My heart shatters. I let out a scream and cover my mouth with my hands. Automatically, Reed moves to stand in front of me to shield me with his body, but the bigger of the men swings his gun in Reed’s direction. “Stay right where you are,” he commands my stepfather. Even the woods seem to have fallen silent, the birdlife no longer filling it with their tweets and twitters, the insects no longer buzzing. Can they sense something terrible happening? Reed speaks calmly and slowly. “Look, we don’t mean you any harm. We were in a plane crash, about a month ago, I think. We’re just trying to get to safety.” We’ve been lost out here in the wilderness for weeks now, lucky to find the cabin that’s been our shelter. But with winter looming, we’d felt we had no choice but to try to hike our way to safety. The big guy arches an eyebrow. “Is that right?” “It is,” Reed confirms. “We’re not a threat to you. We’d really appreciate your help.” The man snorts laughter. “We’re not the people you want to be asking for help from. In case you haven’t noticed, we have guns, and we’re pointing them at you.” “Yeah, I can see that,” Reed says, “but there’s no need. We don’t mean you any harm. Like I said, we’ve been living out here after a plane crash.” “You found our cabin then?” the skinny one asks. “That was your cabin?” Reed feigns innocence. “In which case, yes, we did. Thank you. That place probably saved our lives. We’re very grateful for it.” Big Guy lifts his gun. “You were poking around in there?” Reed stiffens. “Only for supplies. We needed food and fire and water. That’s all.” “You didn’t find anything else?” Big Guy checks. He’s playing with us, I can tell. Toying with us like a cat with a mouse. “No,” Reed says. I want to kick him. He shouldn’t have lied. It’ll only look worse for us. “Really?” The big man bends and picks up the gun Cade dropped when he was struck. He checks the barrel. “’Cause by the way the serial number is filed off, I’d say this is one of ours. And if you found one of our guns, you not only found the rest, but you also found what else—or should I say who else—we left up there with them.” Reed shakes his head. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. We found the gun under the sink, nothing more.” Skinny barks laughter. “Bullshit.” The men both have American accents, so I can only assume they’re gun-smugglers, having brought guns in from the states to sell onto criminals across the
