It was a task he’d taken on without asking. She was his mother, after all. No one deserved to die that way, least of all her, and his dropping everything to care for her during those awful years wasn’t his duty, it was his honor. Since he’d lost her in his life, he’d been so focused on his grief that he’d pretty much lost everything else that had once mattered to him. His girlfriend and Little—Elsie, who had finally tired of always being second place during his mother’s care—had left him three months after his mother passed. She’d never said a word to him.
