I was hurt, troubled and disappointed. Would I remain a useless waste of a witch? Who would curse me with such a fate? Linda’s motherly care could do nothing to stop me from spiralling into a world of sorrow, and at that moment, I wished I had died. The whole town was up and lively, but when you just found out that your magic would never be good enough, that you had fallen from grace to grass, smiling was the last thing on your mind. I walked to the car and unlocked the doors, sitting down without saying a word while I waited for Linda. “I have to stay like this for the rest of my life? That’s just unfair!” I shouted, breaking the silence, and hitting the steering wheel with my hands as my reality smacked me in the face. There was no greater heartbreak than having your goals shattered and, in my case, that ended in my daughter’s death. This news was devastating, and I wondered what would happen when the coven heard about this development. I could sense the end of my membership in the coven and would end up as prey to the demons and dark witches like Ravana Victious. “Don’t beat yourself, honey,” Linda said, and I could sense the concern in her voice. But I was past despair and had entered a sheer state of hopelessness. I crossed my arms as I fought the tears dusting my lashes and faced Linda. “Are you seriously asking me not to be too hard on myself after learning that I might not be a witch again? That I’m useless to the coven? To Chloe?” “Don’t put it that way...” she trailed off. “Then how do I put it, Linda? What better way to accept that my magical powers are gone than this? How do I console myself now that I can no longer save my daughter or protect her when she is in danger? How do I battle the Dark God or Ravana Victious when I can’t even summon a protection spell? I’m a liability now.” Linda put her hand on my arm. This time, I could no longer hold the tears that threatened to escape. It was the beginning of the end, and after a few seconds, I let the tears fall. A steady stream that rolled down my cheeks and stung my eyes. The outside world blurred as I viewed it behind a waterfall of devastation. “Stop it, Bree, the war isn’t over yet. We have Chloe, and we will save her. Yes, we have been informed that you may not be a powerhouse witch like you were before. However, I don’t accept this fate for you and I don’t want you to give up without a fight—” as she tried to continue, I cut her off as my anger spiked. “Did you say without a fight? What the hell have I been doing all this time? I’ve been fighting, Linda. But it seems I’ve been fighting a lost cause. My watch as a witch has ended. I won’t put you and Chloe in danger. “ Linda’s grip on my hand became firmer, and she gave me a solid shake, causing me to focus on her. Her actions made me wonder what she thought could help in a moment such as this and it worked. I focused my eyes on hers and sniffed. “I will give you a good smack the next time you think you are a liability. Come on… even without your magic, we fought against the forces of darkness. We outsmarted Ravana twice and I’m pretty sure she will get a whopping the next time we meet. You may not be a top witch at the moment, but you are still better than most witches in the coven. It’s kinda crazy, I know… we just heard that you have a permanent condition of faulty magic. But, I know one thing and that is you still have magic in you and whatever curse placed on you didn’t take all your powers. It means there is a solution. Now, it might not be easy to find this cure. But we won’t stop looking until we find it and you will say I told you so. Brace yourself and be strong like you have always been. Chloe needs that right now.” My mind drifted to Chloe and how the Dark God was still in control, regardless of what we tried to stop him. The fact that I believed my situation was curable gave me the confidence and will to keep fighting against all odds and right now, I felt like
