I’ve been groomed for this role my whole life, But there are those who said I’d fail. A female boss in a male-dominated sport? People around me are just waiting for me to screw up. And that’s exactly what I do as soon as I lay eyes on Dr. James Lippert. Tall, built as any player on my team, and sexy as sin. I tell myself I have to keep it professional at all costs, Then we share an elevator on the first road trip of the season and all bets are off. I cannot get caught up in his spell, I’ve got too much to prove. And the man who wanted my job is only too happy to watch me fall on my face, So I can’t give him the satisfaction. Rumors of impropriety hit the press, And I’m ready to refute every single one, Even if I’m lying. Even if I break my own heart, Even if I end up raising this baby on my own. CHAPTER 1 KRISTYN “You look like a king on his throne,” I remarked to my dad teasingly. All joking aside, it was hard as hell to see him so diminished, so weak. The kidney disease had taken its toll. After years of trying to manage the condition in its earlier stages, he had succumbed to the need for dialysis. There were times I could hardly bear to see him this way. My once tanned and hearty father was reduced to sitting in his enormous Italian leather chair while the home health care aid adjusted the settings on the machine that would filter toxins from his blood. She excused herself and left us in his office where I tried to look relaxed and casual as I perched on the edge of the couch. “I prefer emperor,” he said wryly. “You know, most kidney patients would be in the hospital or at least the nephrology outpatient treatment clinic for dialysis.” “I’ve worked long and hard all my life. I’ve earned the right to have my treatments in the comfort of my own home and enjoy the privacy. God knows the media would be a pain in my ass if I went into the clinic every week for this. People using their zoom lenses to snap a picture of me eating goddamn ice chips or something, and it would wind up all over the Internet. I’d never hear the end of it.” “Now you know what PR says—any publicity for the team is good publicity.” “Son of a bitch it’s cold in here.” “Let me get you a blanket. Do you want some green tea?” “When has anyone ever wanted green tea? I drink it because my doctor recommended it. I’d rather have a bourbon myself. Now that will chase away any chill.” “I’m not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure you’re not supposed to consume alcohol during dialysis, Dad.” “To hell with the doctors then,” he said, then smiled at the worried expression on my face. “Don’t worry, kiddo, I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing. I promise I’m not ready to give up. Not on life anyway. The team however --” “Excuse me?” “It’s too much, Kris. I’ve been relying on you and Douglas more and more for months. The day-to-day operations of the team have gotten to be too much for me to manage to the standard I want it done. I love the team too much to let them settle for less than the best. The board has been more than generous, and they even offered help if I wanted to stay on.” “But you won’t accept it,” I said softly. It was a miracle my dad had accepted any assistance at all. Delegating even the smallest task meant that he wasn’t in control of the level of perfection that had to be achieved. I’d learned to appreciate the fact that he trusted me with anything at all. It meant that he thought I was less incompetent than the general run of people. “Of course not. I spent decades building up this franchise. I’m not about to let it collapse because I’m too proud to step aside.” I looked at him with a bittersweet mix of sadness and love, tinged with a gentle amusement. It was his pride that drove him, that drove us all to be better. “it’s time for the next generation of leadership, and that means you.” He said it with such formality that it seemed like he was presenting a Presidential Medal of Freedom with an enormous flag billowing in the background. That wasn’t even an affectation. He was that serious about the operational management of the LA Clippers. If excellence was his religion, then his temple was Figueroa Street where the Intuit Center was being constructed. He’d been fighting since I was a kid to get the team out of the Staples Center and the shadow of the Lakers. This partnership with Intuit, this building, was his biggest dream. The idea that he was going to retire before it was complete sobered me. I swallowed hard around the tears. He’d
