Acknowledgments About the Author Other books by Mia Kun PROLOGUE TWO YEARS AGO MATT “This isn’t working.” I stared at the auburn mess spread out on my bed. The setting sun danced on her white skin, as she cuddled my gray pillow contrasting her soft curls. Her eyes were heavy from the orgasm she experienced, and her body relaxed into the mattress. It was almost seven in the evening, and I needed to kick her out before my mom called for dinner. She had been my girlfriend the past few months, my first real one, and my parents adored her, but it needed to end. It was becoming all too serious and all too much. With the way she looked at me, I knew if we didn’t cut ties right away, she would only fall for me deeper, and then I'd be screwed for life. Girls did crazy things to keep a guy. Kiki sat up, pulling the sheets over her bare chest, and her green eyes shot a sad, painful look at me. I ignored how well she fit into my room; despite all the high-end furniture around her, she was the centerpiece of my room. And it was a big ass room with a New York skyline view. “What do you mean?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper. “You said not that long ago that you want this…” I did say that. That was before I saw the way Axel was flirting with other girls, hooking up with them and stringing them along until he could dump them. No attachments, just bodily satisfaction. I wanted to do the same. I wanted to be free and not tied down to one girl. I could fuck anyone. Something unusual tugged on my heart as I watched a tear roll down her face. “There is so much time for us to be together.” “After you fuck every girl in school,” she muttered, getting up from the bed and looking for her uniform. “You’re disgusting, saying all those things to me, just so I would have sex with you!” It felt like an invisible hand reached into my chest and squeezed it tight, but I ignored it. I watched her silently as she dropped my sheet and slid into her clothes. Being fifteen, she handled this well. I was convinced other girls would have made a scene, but she understood. I used her. “Don’t be surprised if you end up alone,” she threw at me as she pulled the zipper up on her uniform skirt, the length barely hitting under her butt. “You’re just a pretty face, without a sexy body, but once someone gets closer, they will realize you’re shallow. There is nothing in your brain, and they will all leave. I choose to stay.” “Why would you stay with someone you find shallow?” I challenged her, crossing my arms in front of my chest, painfully aware how my biceps weren't the biggest. I had abs, but I was lean from all the soccer. I knew I wasn’t nearly as bulky as the football players at our school. “Because I got to know you, and you are different from what you try to portray yourself as,” she said, her voice shaking with held back emotions. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. Clearly, she was with me because of who I was: The King of Eastview High. Since my brother graduated in May, I had to take over, but there was no denying I wasn’t Gabriel. Not nearly close. And she just had to remind me of that. “Sure,” I threw at her sarcastically. “You don’t know the first thing about me.” “That’s not true,” she whispered as tears rolled down her face. “I know you like your coffee with half a bag of brown sugar and with cream. You live for soccer, and secretly you would love to turn that into a career. I know that you sleep on the edge of your pillow, folding the rest over your head. You like complete darkness, otherwise you can’t sleep. You pick your nails when you’re nervous, and your eyes bounce between things. You enjoy cuddling after sex, and I’m sure you love me. You are just terrified to face that.” She got every single thing right, but most of all, the last one hit home. I was falling for her, which felt more like freefalling down the cliff with no security around me. What was the point of it, when I could crash at the bottom and break my bones? I couldn’t risk that. “Please, don’t do this,” Kiki whispered, her waterfalls not stopping. Her usually carefully painted face was all smudged, and despite her bitchy outfit, I knew she wasn’t like the rest of the girls. “Matt… I think I’m pregnant.” Snapping out of my mood when I almost started pitying her, I stared at her. What a shit thing to say just
