LFG! OceanofPDF.com CHAPTER ONE “TELL ME, HOW long did you think you’d get away with it, sleeping with my wife?” Carlton Cleveland leaned back in the excessively padded executive chair, his smug smile framed by the thickness of his jowls. His drawl reeked of smoke and sarcasm, the disdain in his gaze abrasive against Alex’s skin. “I’m—I’m sorry?” Alex heard the quiver in her voice, the feeling of the room floating around her. “You’re sorry?” The man plopped heavy elbows on the smooth surface of the varnished oak desktop, his eyes darkening as his tone shifted toward anger. “You’re sorry, you don’t understand the question? Or you’re sorry for sleeping with her?” Alex opened and closed her mouth, but no sound came out. “Which is it, Miss Grey?” "Senator Cleveland, I—” “That’s President Cleveland, you little twit!” He slammed his hands against the oak. “And I have irrefutable evidence you’ve been fucking my wife!” Alex woke with a start, the pounding of the senator’s fleshly palms against the flat of his desk still ringing in her head. Senator. It was still Senator Cleveland. He wasn’t president. Alex wasn’t standing in the Oval Office. And the bullying southern politician wasn’t accusing her of sleeping with his wife. Though, she was sleeping with his wife. But that was beside the point. Drawing a steadying breath, she let it out slowly, trying to exhale the uneasy feeling of the dream. It was early morning, a faint glow of light casting the shadows around her into nebulous form. Alex sat up, forcing the remainder of her grogginess aside, and took a mental note of her surroundings. December. San Francisco. Catharine’s bed. With thousands of miles travelled and the dozens of hotel room ceilings she’d woken to over the course of the last eight months, it always took a second to remember where she was, and what challenges her day would bring. In the case of this morning, the only sensation greeting her was relief. She’d flown into San Francisco on a red-eye from New York City, where she’d had a layover during her journey home from Madrid. There’d been a series of friendlies against Germany, England, and Spain, and the States had come out with two wins and a draw. A solid way to close the year for the US Women’s National Team. Now, in late December, her offseason could begin. Which would consist of three weeks, instead of the three months she was accustomed to in the years prior to having begun her international career. A price she’d be willing to pay tenfold over, time and again. In a whirlwind of eleven short months, Alex had made an appearance in every international match since the SheBelieves Cup the previous February. She’d netted four goals by the time the CONCACAF W Championship started in late summer—the tournament that served as the World Cup Qualifier for the following year—and earned her first start in the third group stage match against Mexico, in which she’d come one crossbar shy of scoring a hat-trick. By the time the winter European tour rolled around, she’d found herself a consistent fixture on every Starting XI, and closed the season with seventeen caps and eleven international goals. Stats she’d once only dreamed of. A year she’d never imagined possible. And, if nothing went wrong—if she stayed fit, healthy, kept her head about her—she was par for the course to make the twenty-three woman roster heading to the World Cup in England in seven months. Isabelle Atwood—the senior squad manager—had told her as much on the flight home. “I’d wager to say, in your current form, you’re climbing toward the pinnacle year in your career. I’m glad I took a chance on you, Grey.” It was the most rewarding thing Izzy Atwood had ever said to her. The closest thing to a compliment on her successes she would probably ever garner from the impenetrable ice queen. Enough to make Alex grin like an idiot when she settled into her seat beside Erin Halsey for the remainder of the flight across the Atlantic. “You look like you just joined the mile high club,” the goalkeeper had razzed her, her thick brows knit in mock skepticism. “Kind of gross, since the only other person I saw heading to the toilets was Monica.” “You don’t think she’s my type?” Alex had returned, before sticking her tongue out at her friend, unwilling to allow thoughts of Monica Ashby to ruin her high. The rivalry between them had become almost legendary, heightened by the mid-season trade that had brought the
