Chaste Moon Saybrook Wolf Shifters Book 3 Jean Stokes Preface New from bestselling romance author Jean Stokes… A bad moon is rising and the stakes have never been higher. Charlene Weaver is headstrong. The kind of woman used to getting what she wants. But when her plans go awry thanks to a meddlesome mother, Charlene concocts a scheme no one saw coming. The object of her attention becomes Noah Goodwin. Too bad he has no idea what her real motivations are. Noah is a successful attorney with his own demons. His past gambling addictions have left him wary of money, forcing him to see life as a chore instead of having fun. When Charlene enters his life he finds the energy returning, even if he can’t see the curveball coming at him. Can Noah navigate the troubles of his past and find love with the alluring yet mysterious Charlene or is he destined to be a pawn in her game? One capable of ruining both of their lives. The heat is turning up with Chase Moon, the third installment of the thrilling Saybrook Wolf Shifters series. Chapter One Charlene I wish I could say that I feel remorse. Or even guilt for that matter. Hearing the news of my father’s death leaves me with... well, nothing. We haven’t been on speaking terms for the past five years so I’m not sure exactly how I’m supposed to be feeling. I learned of it five hours ago. Quietly, in his sleep, as it should be. I would have much preferred if he’d been hit by a car or taken by some awful, draining disease that made him choke on his own air and sputum. But we can’t always get what we want. My mother was in tears when she called, of course. Always the overdramatic queen of the household so that she can get as much attention as she wants. I’m not buying it. Underneath the facade, she’s probably happy as a clam that my father is dead. From the outside looking in, those are probably terrible thoughts to have of someone who brought me into this world, clothed me, fed me, and ensured that I had everything I needed. Except my father wasn’t. He paid for everything, sure, and made it so I could go to the best schools and get the best education. But that was where his involvement in my life ended. He had always been more concerned about making money than trying to demonstrate any kind of familial affection. And my mother bore the brunt of it, verbally shielding us from each other in order to keep the peace. It annoyed me that a woman like her would continue to put up with his bullshit. And then I learned to stop caring. She’s a grown-ass woman who can make her own decisions. As am I, and I choose to let her suffer with her choices, no matter how much it hurts her. The wind rushes through my hair as I drive up the long winding road toward my parents’ house. I can’t remember the last time I’ve been here, nor do I want to because there likely aren’t any happy memories connected to it. This one will be bittersweet, I’m sure. It depends entirely on how much screaming my mother will do when I get there. Except the driveway is completely packed with cars when I pull up to the gate. Several of them are even parked on the lawn, and I know how much my mother treasures the grass with how much she pays her gardener. For the moment, the grass is likely the last thing on her mind as she drinks in the attention of whoever is in the house, paying their respects. I choose to park outside the gate instead; that way, if I need to leave in a hurry, I don’t have to worry about juggling cars with someone else to make it work. And at least I’m not ruining the grass. That’s another tally mark in my favor, which is always a bonus when it comes to my mother. The house rumbles with conversation before I even step inside the doors. So many people. Whatever thoughts I have in my head are swept up
