Sweat drips from my body as I struggle to catch my breath. Looking around the room, I blink when I realize that I'm still in my room. Slowly, my breath returns to normal and my lips shake when I remember the dream. It has become a frequent occurrence now, making it difficult for me to sleep properly. I step down from the bed and stare back at the bed to see a portion of it soaked in sweat. Sighing, I make my way into the bathroom. Stripping off my clothes, I walk straight into the bathroom where I turn on the faucet and let the water beat my skin. A tremble travels through my body, making me hiss. As the water cools my body, my sense of purpose returns, reminding me about what I have to do. I have a responsibility and as much as I hate that it makes it difficult for me to sleep at night, I appreciate that it is constantly on my mind. After some minutes of staying under the water, I turn off the faucet and walk out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around my body. I walk over to the closet and pick out a free sized gown which I throw on. I look around the place in search of my phone and I find it lying under my pillow. I take it from the bed, settle on the edge of the bed and unlock it. I scroll through my phone and open De Voas winery's website where I usually spend my mornings. Some people begin their days with reading books. Some others begin by exercising or journaling while some others begin by listening to podcasts. It is not the same for me. I begin my day by visiting De Voas winery's website and spending hours on it. I subscribed to all their newsletters, read all their blog posts and follow them everywhere. I have one goal - to ruin Frank and his son Richard. It has become my life's purpose. I spend each day thinking about the best way to strike and take the company from them but I have not been able to come up with anything. I click on Richard's picture and stare at it for a while. Running my fingers across his face, I sigh. I want what he has. I have spent every day of my life hating him and willing to destroy him. The taste of his defeat lingers on my tongue now. I can imagine him vacating the seat of the CEO at De Voas winery so I'd occupy it. The thought fills me with renewed strength, one which I want to fan for the rest of my life. A tremor passes through my body, making me sigh again. Throwing my phone to the bed, I go over my schedule for the day - writing an email to the university was on my list. The second thing on my list is job hunting. I detest that I need to work despite being in college but it's either that or be stranded. This gives me more reason to hate Richard and Frank. If Frank had not snatched everything from my father, I wouldn't have had to work a single day in my life. My shoulders slump and I shake my head in disgust. Thoughts of how I grew up with a father who was always angry at life fills my mind. The only thing which gave my father a tiny bit of joy was hope. Hope that I would grow up to avenge him and bring him the fulfillment which he could never bring himself. Most of the time, I spent my time watching my father. He was always brooding. As a man who lost his wife two days after the birth of his infant, he could not help but raise his child all alone. Not a day went by without him telling me about how he missed my mother. It was tragic. On some days, he did not spare me the courtesy of casting a glance my way. He said I looked too much like her and the only thing that did was cause him pain. On some other days, he spent his time watching the news and grumbling about the loss of his business. At the start of it all, I never understood until one day… "Father! What are you doing?" I yell when I see him holding a glass in his right hand and squeezing tightly. He doesn’t even seem to realize it. I drop my school bag on the ground and rush up to him and try to force his hand open but his grip on it is too tight. Afraid, I take some steps back and shake my head in sadness. “Father, please,” My voice comes out as a broken whisper. I don’t know how that manages to pull him out of whatever he is in but he turns in my direction before releasing the glass. I take his hand, gently lead him towards the couch and squat so as to be able to attend to him. After making sure that he is settled in, I hurry up the stairs and return minutes later with the first aid box. “Naomi, you do not have to worry yourself,” He says, trying to pull his hands from my grip.
