Prologue Khenan I walk through the doors on the first day of my last year of high school at Mott High. I never thought this year would come, the year that would make me the first person in my family to graduate high school. Not to mention that I would also be the first graduate in my family who was a first-generation American. My parents are so proud of me for getting to this point, so over-the-moon that they decided to emigrate from Jamaica. They moved here and settled in our neighborhood of Spanish Harlem before I was born, ensuring that their son would have a chance to live the American dream. This year I am one step closer to that dream, which mostly consists of getting the hell out of Spanish Harlem. I guess Harlem isn’t that bad, but it would be better if Coretta Brown would turn her attention to someone else. She has somehow managed to make the last four years for me a living hell, but she does that to everybody. Being the head cheerleader on the Varsity Squad tends to do that to girls, making their heads grow in size with ‘power.’ Her looks don’t help, being as she is one of the prettiest girls I have ever seen. I want to hate her, I really do, but the way that her emerald green eyes pop against her dark skin and black hair makes it difficult. The worst part is that she likes to recruit her dumbass jock buddies to assist in her torture, and they do everything that she tells them to. Her minions have shoved me in the garbage can in the men’s locker room, snapped me with towels after my shower, and shoved me inside of my locker. Then, they run off to tell their queen what they have done, hoping to please her with their malevolence. I’m not sure why she chose me as her target, and I don’t really care at this point. I’m over it and I’m ready for this school year to be done. By this time next year, I will be walking through the doors of MIT on a full ride scholarship, and I’m not going to let Coretta or her friends ruin that for me. I grab the books for my first three classes out of my locker and close the metal door, being sure to lock it before I head off to homeroom. Last week I forgot to lock it because I was running late, and Coretta thought it would be hilarious to fill my locker with containers of protein powder. I wouldn’t have known it was her except for the fact that she left a note on top telling me that “I needed to bulk my wimpy ass up.” I also caught her watching me at the end of the hall, waiting to see my reaction. Sucks for her though because I didn’t waste my time giving her one. I just threw the containers away and went to class after I grabbed my math book. I enter my homeroom class and make my way to my usual seat, smack dab in the middle. I don’t like to be too close to the front where I can’t see what Coretta and her friends are doing behind my back, nor would I subject myself to the torture of sitting in the back where she and the minions sit. There are times that I wish that I could be one of them, goofing around with her and talking to her. I feel like if I could get her alone and actually speak to the girl, that she might not be as rude and relentless as shes with her friends. It does seem at times that she likes to shock people with her behavior, showing them that just because she is the head cheerleader, that she can be crazy too. Maybe this is all a front and when she is all alone, she is actually down to earth. One can dream, right? I’m almost to my seat when Coretta sticks her leg out, tripping me and sending me to the floor in front of everyone. The entire class cheers her
