It turns out, my girlfriend cheating on me with a coworker had been a blessing in disguise. Without Sarah’s betrayal, I might never have gotten the kick in the ass I needed to transfer from the small FBI office in Worcester to the much bigger department in Boston. Luckily for me, the Special Agent in Charge at Boston, Peter Walker, was an old family friend. It had been just over three weeks since I moved to Boston, and Walker had given me a ‘grace’ period to get settled, before throwing me back into the thick of it. Today was my first official day on the job, and I was both excited and nervous. Being an FBI Agent was sort of in the blood, and my father had been part of the Bureau before he retired. Not only did I want to follow in his footsteps, but through him, I’d seen how important the FBI was. I wanted to contribute to making my country a safer place for all. Even though I had fifteen years’ experience in the Bureau, I couldn’t help but feel like the new kid in class. I was a big fish from a small pond, going into a huge ocean of much more experienced agents. The FBI department in Boston was three-time bigger than the one in Worcester. I was blown away when I saw the building for the first time. The one in Worcester had been a small, single floor unit, with a few private offices and then an open communal area with around twenty desks huddled together. The building in Boston was huge, with eight floors. It was built out of modern concrete, accented with metal beams, and large windows looking out onto the city. I was glad I’d dressed especially for the occasion, wearing my finest designer suit. My former coworkers used to rib me for splurging a little of every paycheck on designer suits. Clothing was important to me, and how a person presented themselves said a lot about them. It was vital to me that I make a good first impression. Head held high, I made my way into the building lobby, where a young woman in a striking magenta blouse sat at a reception desk. Beyond the desk was a corridor marked ‘authorized access only,’ that led to who only knew where. “Hey, I’m Benjamin Hayes. Today is my first day, and--” I trailed off, usually nervous, but the receptionist instantly put me at ease with her warm smile. “Mr. Hayes, welcome. I was told to expect your arrival. Here’s your visitor’s pass. Please make your way to the second floor, where Agent Phillips will get you all inducted.” “Thank you,” I said, taking the temporary identification card from the receptionist. I slipped the lanyard around my neck, and then headed to the elevator, and pressed the button for the second floor. When the elevator opened on the correct level, I found a man around my age waiting for me. “Hey, I’m Jason Phillips,” he said, extending his hand for me to shake. “I’ve been assigned to show you the ropes, and get you orientated.” “Great to meet you, Jason. I’m Benjamin.” We shook hands, and Jason had a firm grip. He swiped his card on the security door to grant us access, and then led me through to an expansive office with a number of individual cubicles. “So, this is where the majority of the work goes down,” Jason explained, gesturing around the office. I quickly counted nine cubicles, all with their own desks and computers. Eight of them were occupied, and I assumed the final two were for myself and Jason. “Level one is reception and beyond that is the archives and the gym, then levels two to seven are the offices.
