It features a demon king who can enter dreams, two flawed main characters who don’t have the happiest of backgrounds, a priest sidekick, secrets that go way back, and plenty of steam. Content warnings: violence and murder, past mentions of sexual assault (not of the main characters), and mentions of psychiatric difficulties and medication use. Chapter One Jude I was five when I encountered my first demon. At that age, I was too young to put a name to it. That came later. But that didn’t stop me from recognizing something terribly wrong with the man standing at the edge of the children’s playground. To the innocent onlooker, he was an ordinary guy. Middle-aged. Slightly balding. Not overly tall. Dressed in a suit, which to my young eyes had appeared expensive. He could have been a businessman there to pick up his child, but I knew he wasn’t. I knew he was something else, something masquerading as human. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been asked to explain what I ‘think I see’ to men in white coats with notebooks they’re eager to fill with my words. And answering that question never did get any easier back when I was honest. Not that the look on their faces helped, that professional mask of ‘I’ve asked, now I’m forced to listen to the answer while trying not to let on that I’m convinced he’s talking absolute bullshit. Amusing bullshit I can write about in a paper, but bullshit, nevertheless.’ What do I see when I see a demon? It’s like I can see its true face beneath the one that everyone else sees. Not in actual terms. There are no eyes or mouth. It’s more like a glow, like smoke clinging to their skull deep beneath the skin. Smoke that writhes and pulses. The color varies. Some are red. Some are blue. I’ve even seen the occasional black glow. The doctor I relayed that to really went to town on that one, informing me in no uncertain terms as he peered over the top of his glasses that if something’s black, it can’t glow. Maybe not if you bring human characteristics into it, but there’s nothing human about what I see, and it did glow. What did I do when I saw that first demon? I did what any five-year-old would do when presented with something horrible. I screamed and leaped off the swing, skinning my hands and knees, and running over to my mum, who’d been having a lovely chat with one of the other parents.
