I love hearing from my readers. Please contact me at [email protected] CHAPTER 1 The sound of a lock clicking made my eyes flutter open. The sun filtered through the drawn, black velvet drapes that matched the covers on the four-poster bed. The last thing I remembered was Gulath. Was this a mirage like Jarvil’s castle? I hadn’t traveled to a new location, had I? There was no way this room was in the Underworld. I allowed my magic to filter out and nothing in the Victorian-styled room wavered. This place was real and judging by the ornate pictures of half-dressed women from another era, I was still in the human realm. As the events from the Underworld returned along with my failed attempts to escape, I thought of Sinn. He had to be alive. I had gained all this power, and it seemed like it was for nothing. My heart ached for the demon demigod who had become one of my best friends since Chloe’s illness. I could no longer imagine my life without him in it. Even my late husband hadn’t wormed his way into my heart so fast. I rolled off of the bed and gazed out at the landscape surrounding me. I was in a mansion with rolling hills. There were several large homes in the background and while I had no idea where in the world I was, it was an upscale neighborhood with acres of property surrounding multimillion-dollar homes. The pristine nature of the ground reminded me of an article I had seen in a style magazine. It had mentioned High hills and was only located an hour from Drima Falls. The average mansion was over ten million, so I had never been near the area, but an Incubus demon who was centuries old with a god backing him was likely to have money for such extravagances. The overindulgence of it all was fitting with what I had learned about Gulath. He was vain, pompous, and over-impressed with his abilities. Still, he had been passed over by his father, and he was acting out. There was no reasoning with a thousand-year-old toddler. I went to the shiny oak dresser and pulled open one drawer. While I had no idea what I expected to find, lacy underwear and matching bras were not it. The next one was filled with woman’s clothing. All high-end and in my size. Had the previous owner left all this? Did Gulath actually purchase this property or just kill the owner and claim it? The latter was likely, but with the distance between neighbors, I wouldn’t be getting near another property soon. The pictures on the table beside the bed were of a smiling older couple, and I cursed under my breath. The demon bastard had to have borrowed this property, and I feared for the whereabouts of the owners. I turned quickly when the door unlocked, and a face like Sinn’s entered the room. “Good, you are awake. I figured you would return to me soon.” “I want nothing to do with you,” I said. Gulath’s black hair and blue eyes were so similar to Sinn’s, it actually hurt to look at him. But the similarity ended there. Gulath had a madness and evil taint I could feel emanating around him. I had to wonder if that was a result of the Dark God’s influence or if Gulath had always been this way. “And yet we will spend an eternity together. Don’t worry Breena. I am an incubus demon and far more skilled than my brother. I promise you will scream my name before this night is through.” I stepped back. “I would rather die than sleep with you. How arrogant do you have to be to think I would have sex with you after everything you did to me and to Sinn?” Gulath ran his hand through his perfect hair. “I love how you think you have a choice. Every move you made was planned out by me to ensure we opened a passageway between worlds. You may not feel it yet, but soon you won’t care about the humans or Sinn. Hell, you won’t even care about your daughter.” “No! There is nothing you can do or say to make me forsake my daughter,” I hissed. “That’s the beauty of it, Breena. Other than taking your magic, you did the rest. The moment you picked up the Book of Lost Shadows, you were lost. Did you really think your mother hid the book because she didn’t trust you? She was well aware of the consequences of using its spells.” My heart stuttered, and I wasn’t sure if I should believe him. “My Mother was protecting me. Everyone knows that dark magic has a price. I will never touch that book again.” “Not even to save your daughter?” he taunted. “There is nothing in there that will save Chloe. You are just being a prick.” Gulath
