I adjust my collar, walking from the surgical theater back to my office, needing an intense back massage. As I walk to my office, my eyes meet Camile's. She is about to use the elevator, and I hold my gaze on her. She holds hers, too, until the elevator doors close. I wonder why she is everywhere I turn. Sometimes, when I walk to a patient's room, she might walk into another patient's room. It is like she knows where I went and when. I try to discard the thought. It might be a coincidence, but my insecurity makes me think she is subtly positioning herself to be seen. Another theory confirms my thought about Camile; it is Mother's fondness for her. For a few months, I thought she had gotten the job at the hospital based on merit. But it was not long before Mother grew fond of her. Camile is also friends with my younger brother's girlfriend, Amelia. Her friendship with Amelia wouldn't have bothered me if they had just remained casual friends, but I hear Amelia refer to Camile as her soul sister. Soul sisters! These words are quite intimate, even spiritual. While I connect Mother’s fondness with Camile, coupled with Camile’s tight friendship with Amelia, I strongly think she has a hidden motive concerning the family. I decide to watch her closely. As the first son of the Robinson family, my job is to protect the family against an intruder, even if that intruder is an attractive blond, blue-eyed junior staff member in my hospital. Camile and I barely speak. It is like an unspoken rule we have between us. I treat her just like I treat other staff members at Wallace. I can only say that Camile does her work the best she can. But whenever she gets invited to a family gathering, I pretend she isn't there. However, I think she is gracious, beautiful, and elegant. Everything I know about her, I know against my will. I might have learned about my junior surgeon during one of Mother's endless speeches about her. Then, I learn that Mother's interest in Camile stems from the fact that Camile looks like her when she was younger. I have seen Mother's old pictures a million times, but I can't put together any resemblance. I hear my pager beep as I hit my head on my chair. I groan, pretending not to hear the beeping sound, hoping it only comes from my head. But I am wrong; my pager beeps again, and I drag myself to the counter Joseph, my best friend and colleague, calls doctors for impromptu meetings, medical check-ups, and emergencies, and he is beeping me through a pager. "What is the emergency?" I ask the nurse by the counter. I can see the terror in her eyes. Her voice breaks as she speaks, “Doctor Camile is locked up with a patient.” I raise my brows, understanding her concern, but I can't understand why she looks terrified. "I will get the technical team to get her out." “That’s not the point,” she says, stopping me as I motion to leave. “He is holding her with a knife.” Instantly, I am concerned about Camile's safety because she is one of my employees. I punch the elevator several times, hoping it will open in time. The fifteen-second timing on the elevator seems the longest I have ever waited for something to happen. I swallow hard and wipe off the sweat forming on my face. The ding of the elevator catches my attention, and I run to the room, but it is locked. The nurse at the counter is right; Camile is being held at knifepoint. The rest of the staff are out of the room, and the door is locked from inside. The two security men for this wing are also trying to open the door. I rub my eyes, hoping this is a bad dream I will wake up from. But It isn’t a bad dream. One of my doctors is in danger of being cut in the throat. What a nice headline for the media. “How did this happen?” I ask Joseph when he walks up to me. "Camile was assigned to him a few weeks ago," he says. "The patient thinks he is going to die, and that he needs a quick treatment." Camile looks calmer than I thought she would be. She raises her hands while the patient holds a knife to her neck. “He thinks killing her will make him better?” I ask, trying to find out how to get into the patient’s head. "No," Joseph replies, "he just wants to hold her for a ransom. He tells us to find a quick treatment, or he will kill Camile. He says he needs to get to his daughter." I shake my head. The nurse who called me earlier walks to my side and asks if she should call the police. "No," I say, "don't call the police
