DYING FOR MY VENGEANCE DEMON FOILS AND FURY BOOK FOUR LAURETTA HIGNETT CONTENTS Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Chapter 12 Chapter 13 Chapter 14 Chapter 15 Chapter 16 Chapter 17 Chapter 18 Chapter 19 Chapter 20 Chapter 21 Chapter 22 THANK YOU A little more… CHAPTER 1 The metro city police department has issued an urgent warning to the public following this morning’s shocking and bloody massacre at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Several bodies have been recovered from the scene, with a witness telling police that the execution-style murders were committed by a single perpetrator. That suspect has been identified as ex-special forces soldier Conrad Sinclair… My eyes blinked open. Even the bliss of Conrad’s kiss couldn’t distract me from the icy chill that seized my heart when the words from the news bulletin hit my ears. For a long moment, I couldn't speak. Neither could he. It was his mother who broke the silence. “Connie…” Her voice wavered. She understood what every single word of that news bulletin meant. We were being hunted. Conrad stared back at me, a hardness in his eyes. “Don’t,” I said roughly, cupping his face with both of my hands. “Don’t even say it.” He let out a soft breath. “Sandy…” “No.” “You have to go. You need to go now.” I set my jaw. “The hell I do.” “He’s coming for you, Sandy. Not me. You know that.” I did know that. Lord Seth was moving a lot quicker than I ever expected. I was hoping for a bit of a breather while he tried to figure out exactly who I was; a time-out while he formulated his evil plan. Of course, that would never happen. He already had a plan, and he was forging ahead, full speed. I was just a bump in the road. Easily flattened. Before today, all we knew was that Lord Seth was a dangerous, shadowy figure. He was a cult leader who united the festering underbelly of the supernatural world—the blood witches, the rogue shifters and arrogant, power-crazed vampires. He convinced them that since they were stronger, they deserved to lord it over those who were physically weaker. That meant humans, definitely. But more specifically, women. We thought Lord Seth was a dangerous man, a witch with too much power, a man who decided to use his magic to send our society back to the dark ages—a time when women were objects, mere possessions to own and use as men saw fit. The reality was far worse. We now knew exactly who he was. Lord Seth was Colin Shephard, the most popular senator the country had seen in decades, and the odds-on favorite to win the presidency. He’d only just started his campaign, and he’d already amassed a record-breaking amount in donations. He controlled most of the media, and he had the backing of the world’s richest men. Despite all of this being common knowledge, Colin Shephard appeared in the public eye as lily-white, incorruptible, charming, charismatic and well liked—the kind of guy anyone would want in their corner. He effortlessly presented himself as being a champion for all the people, someone who understood how tough life was these days. He was someone who could bring the kind of change the country desperately needed. A return to the good old days. To the general public, the ‘good old days’ were the times when a single income could buy a house and support a family of three; a time when you didn’t have to declare bankruptcy and live in your car if your kid got cancer. But to Colin Shephard, the ‘good old days’ were when you could own slaves, your children were your possessions, and your wife couldn’t vote or even divorce you if you raped and beat her. Somehow, that part didn’t make it to the campaign posters. Even as a mere human, Colin Shephard was insanely dangerous. He could twist any story he wanted to, he could push any narrative he liked. He could turn the entire world against us. And as the Wraith… as the most powerfully evil blood witch in the whole world, with extra powers bestowed on him by the Endless Darkness itself… We were fucked. The enormity of our situation hit me like a ton of bricks. Conrad watched the fear blossom in my eyes. “You need to get my mom out of here,” he said gruffly. “You need to get somewhere safe.” I stared back at him. “I’m not leaving you.” “You have to.” His blue eyes turned to ice. “Sandy, I’m injured. I won’t make it. I don’t know exactly how many fractures I’ve got, but I know I’m hurt bad. I can barely move my legs–” I put my finger over his lips. “Shush. It doesn’t matter. I’m not leaving you here. I’m not.” I knew how hurt he was. The doctors had given me a list of his injuries. Severe concussion, multiple bone fractures, internal bleeding, multiple lacerations and contusions, blunt force trauma… He’d been in surgery for six hours. They still didn’t know if he was going to make it. The fact that he was awake right now was a miracle. “You have to go. You heard the news bulletin. He’s coming for me.” “No.” I shook my head. “He’s coming for me. He’s using you to do it. Shephard knows about Mavka, Conrad. His first priority will be taking her out.” In the back of my mind, Mavka nudged me. Everything she knew about Shephard rattled around in my brain. There was no time for that, though. “I’ll catch you up,” I told Conrad. “But first, we’ve gotta get out of here.” He took a shallow breath in, and ground his teeth, the frustration flaring in his blue eyes. “I can’t move, Sandy,” he growled. “I can’t protect you. You have to
