Damien Epilogue Off-Limits Protector Daddy Chapter 1 Chapter 2 1 SOFIA I’m holding my terminally sick mother’s hand when I hear the shots. My heart beats rapidly in my chest as I look down at her. She’s my best friend. I know that some women have a bad relationship with their mothers, but she and I have never been that way. She knows everything about me. She is the only one that I can turn to when I need advice. And I’m losing her. It can be an hour, it can be a month, but it’s coming, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Mama is never going to see me walk down the aisle and marry a man I love. I’m not going to see her loving her grandchildren. I won’t get to know her any more than I do now. It breaks my heart. Every time I used to think about my future, she was there with me through every step of the way. The gunfire outside reminds me that in our lifestyle, life is fragile to begin with. And long lives are a blessing, not a given. At first, the few shots make me think the men are practicing their shooting in the yard. Then come the screams. The barked orders. Mama’s eyes widen as I jump out of the chair and it clatters to the floor. I dash across the room and slam her door shut before bolting it. Mama tries to get out of bed but I give her a glare that has her sliding back under the sheets. “Sofia, I told you I didn’t want that damn gun in here,” Mama says as I pull a gun out of the backpack I dropped in the corner of her room. “When will you ever listen?” I roll my eyes and press a finger to my lips. There are more shots fired and shouting in the hall. It’s hard to believe that the wife of the head of the Alvarez cartel would have a problem with guns, but she does. She all but banned them from her bedroom after the time Papa shot a hole through the door when someone was speaking too loudly in the hall. Since then, she is anti-gun despite the lifestyle she lives. After a few more moments, the gunfire stops and the silence is deafening. My pulse is pounding as I listen at the door for any sign that this isn’t quite over yet. “Let me in,” Papa says, his voice stern. I keep my gun in hand, pointed at the ground as I unlock the door and open it. Papa slides inside and closes the door behind him, locking it again. “Are you two okay?” He looks at Mama though the question is for both of us. She gives him a soft smile and nods, wrinkling her nose when she sees his gun. “What have I told the both of you about bringing weapons into this bedroom?” Mama crosses her arms. “I might be dying but that doesn’t mean that the two of you are going to run around doing what you want. That damn lavender hair is already enough to drive me mad.” I laugh and run my hand through my hair, shrugging. “I don’t know. I think it looks good.” Papa rolls his eyes and sits on the edge of Mama’s bed. “We’re not going to start arguing now, after we’ve just been attacked. I have more important matters to deal with than the color of Sofia’s hair.” “Who was it?” Mama asks, her tone as cold as ice. Even on her eventual deathbed, Mama is still twice as deadly and intimidating as Papa will ever be. “The Russos. Word is that the eldest son is pulling them back to the surface after spending the last two years underground.” At the mention of the Russos, my spine stiffens. I hold the gun a little tighter, the walls of the room starting to close in around me. It’s been just over three years since the drive-by. I’ll never forget that day. “Why would they start to emerge now?” Mama asks. “Isn’t the FBI still watching them?” Papa shrugs. “The rumor is that they have connections to the FBI. Antonio’s daughter married an agent. An active agent, if what I hear is correct, though I can’t imagine that it is.” “Not active,” I say, looking at Papa. “Not anymore, but he still has connections inside.” “What are they going to do once they see that the cartel has taken over their territory?” Mama coughs, speckles of blood appearing on her white shirt. “Sorry.” “Don’t be,” I say, tucking my gun away and getting her a tissue. “As for the Russos, they’ll keep attacking until they wear us down and take back their land.” Papa sighs. “I’m sending out men to deal with their consiglieres now.
