Land STORY TIMELINE NOTE If you have not read Broken, it is highly advised to do so to fully understand Rayne and Onyx’s story. PROLOGUE RAYNE I let the harsh breeze dry the tears that have been steadily running down my face since I left the clubhouse. I walked out of there thinking I would need a few minutes to clear my head, but now with Onyx’s words spiraling around in my brain, I know there’s no real way I can ever go back there. I’ve destroyed any chances I would ever have at even remaining friends with him or any of the other guys in the club. I genuinely thought I was doing the right thing, and it turned out to be a complete disaster. I look over my shoulder at the street sign and realize I’ve walked more than a mile away from the clubhouse. Now, with my desire not to go back and with Onyx’s clear instructions, I put my hand out to hail a cab. There’s one place I know I can go when I just need to talk. Jazlyn’s not going to want to hear anything I have to say, and if I tell her it was me who tipped off Onyx, I’m sure she will hate me as well. No, out of everyone in the world, there are only two people I know I can count on to help me through this. The sad part about it is they just happen to be dead. I instruct the cab to take me to St. Thomas Cemetery. When I get there, I pull a few wildflowers from the walkway and make my way over to my parents’ grave. They were the best parents, both of them loving Jazlyn and me in ways that let us know that no matter what or who we turned out to be, they would always be proud of us. I guess I get my honesty streak from them. They taught my sister and me that no matter what, we should always try to do the right thing. It’s a lesson that I still hold dear to my heart, even to this day. A lesson that has gotten me into more trouble than I care to think about. My parents are buried in a side-by-side plot with one large headstone for both of them. It only made sense that we buried them this way. My parents loved each other passionately. There was rarely a day in the house when we didn’t catch them cuddling in the corner at least once or twice. They had the kind of love people wrote romance stories about. It was the kind of love that I only dreamed of having. At one point, Onyx was the star of those dreams, but after the way he treated me today, I can safely say he’s no longer a candidate. I remember when we found out that our parents were killed in a car crash. Of course, I was unbearably upset, but there was also a part of me that was slightly consoled that they had died together. The way they did everything. Side by side. I feel the emotions getting stronger the closer I get to their grave, and when I finally reach them, I collapse onto the ground. I let my head fall to my folded arms and cry my eyes out on their grave. “Oh, Mom, I wish you were here. I don’t know how to deal with this. Onyx is one of the good guys. He may be acting like a douchebag right now, but even through all of this, I know he’s not bad. I hate that Jazlyn hurt him like this and that I thought it was my place to tell him. I don’t know, maybe I should have just let him live blissfully in the dark.” “Ignorance is the root of misfortune, sweet girl.” I swear I hear my father’s voice echo in my head. He was a real stickler about people knowing the truth. He believed more heartache and pain came when people were blind to what was really happening. When we didn’t know something, he was right there to teach us. “I know, Dad, but still, now that I’ve told him, everything is all screwed up. I’ve probably lost my job, one of my closest friends hates me, and when Jazlyn finds out, she’s going to hate me too. The worst part of it all, I lost my virginity to a man I’ve wanted for years, except now he can’t even look at me. It’s all messed up.” I wipe the tears away from my face and take in a deep breath before I continue talking. “Honestly, it feels like a huge chunk of my heart has been broken and nothing will ever make it whole again. I wonder if this is how everyone feels after they have sex the first time. Mom, I know you told me your
