Chapter 17 Epilogue Prologue Liam A masquerade party was the very last place that I wanted to be. I had a shit load of work that needed to be completed before it could go to the market. The only reason I was even here was because my younger brother Dean was adamant about dragging my ass out. We hadn’t had much of a chance to see each other recently with me working a lot. Tonight, Dean came over to my house, uninvited, and wouldn’t shut the hell up until I agreed to go out with him to this stupid party. Who the hell even throws masquerade parties? Douchebags, that’s who. The party was being held within someone’s home; if it had been at a club then at least I could have disappeared within a crowd. Instead, I was at someone’s house with a bunch of strangers and that made it difficult for me to slip out. I had picked out a simple black mask that Dean had with him. I didn’t want to wear one; however, there was a chance that people would recognize me, and it would be best to avoid any photos being posted online about this. The last thing I needed was for word to get out that I was at a college party with a bunch of twenty-year-olds. The music was loud enough to make the walls pulse. Everywhere I looked, it was scantily clad women dancing with other women and men. Normally, I would have loved being in the middle of all the energy, but tonight I couldn’t seem to get myself in the mood. We made our way towards the back where the kitchen would be. Apparently, Dean had been here before because he had no problem knowing exactly where to go. As we moved to the back of the house, I could see that there were mainly young people here, in their early twenties mostly. I realized I might actually be old enough to be the father to some of them. “Couldn’t you have found a party with any older people in it?” I asked Dean as we grabbed a drink. “Old people are boring. All they want to do is talk.” He took a shot before he continued. “Go, mingle, get laid.” He finished before he headed off, leaving me in the kitchen to fend for myself. I could go home. This would be the perfect opportunity for me to escape and Dean wouldn’t be any wiser. And yet my legs decided to take me up the stairs to see the rest of the house. It was actually a nice house, once you got over the slew of drunken college students all over the place. This was clearly one of their parents’ homes and come morning, there would be a mad dash to clean the place up before they returned from whatever trip they were on. Most of the doors up here were closed and I could vaguely hear people having sex behind them. With each woman I passed, I felt discouraged. They were attractive, but they weren’t peaking my interests. When I was younger, I was happy to sleep with anyone, but as I aged, I wanted to have a connection with someone first. It didn’t have to be a profound connection. I wasn’t looking for commitment, I was just looking for someone that I felt a deep desire for. I wanted a passion that consumed me. I wanted to see that passion in her eyes. That’s what I was chasing, and I highly doubted I was going to be finding that here tonight. Just then a woman caught my eye. She was walking down the hallway towards me. She had dark red curly hair that reached the top of her shoulders. She had a black and white mask on, but from this distance I couldn’t see her eye color. What I could see was the short black dress that she was wearing with black stiletto heels. Ok, maybe tonight it could be about attraction. I headed towards her, but she turned and went into one of the open bedrooms. I headed into the room to see that she wasn’t the only one in it, but actually a group of about seven, four women and three men. To my surprise, they weren’t engaging in any sexual activity, but instead they were sitting around the room playing spin the bottle. I was instantly getting flashbacks to my days in high school and for a moment, I had to question how old they were. My attraction vanished, and the disappointment returned. “Come on, I’m bored of this. Let’s play something else.” One of the women complained. “I know, truth or dare. Emphasis on the dare.” One of the guys said as he air kissed one of the women from across the room, which caused some to chuckle while others groaned. “Hey, you wanna join us?” It took me a minute to realise that the woman that I had followed into this room was speaking to me. Did I want to play truth or dare? No, but Dean had dragged me here and the woman seemed nice enough. “Why
