Prologue Here we go again. Yet another new town, yet another new house. The monotony of it all. I closed my eyes and took a breath, frowning at the mingling scents filling my nose. The first thing I smelled was wet grass and the pleasantly sweet, sharp scent of it always rendered me a tad nostalgic because it reminded me of the Faroe Islands. I hadn’t been there in a while, but there was nothing else like it. The lush greenery and tranquility of the islands was medicine for a battered soul. The wind changed direction, and the older, musty, mossy smell of the trees replaced the aromatic scent of the grass. I could hear the birds flitting around between the branches, their tiny hearts beating out a furious rhythm. One of the downsides of having overactive senses was seeing and hearing everything. Somewhere along the floor of the woods, a mouse sensed a predator and scurried for cover, and the sudden movement of the small rodent kicked up some soil. The musky, earthy odor of it dredged up dark memories, and I shook my head to exorcize the phantoms of my past. Then, a sharper smell overwhelmed me. Manure. The stench of it reminded me of the mud and piss-filled streets of yore and dirty, snotty children scuttling about. Remembering the chaos that had accompanied it made me more appreciative of the fact that I now found myself living in the relative calm of the 21st century. Something in my consciousness pushed aside the smells as a familiar sense of unease began trickling down the back of my neck, like a spider skittering across my skin. Something was about to fall. A crash somewhere nearby confirmed the sensation and I groaned to myself. The incompetence I had to deal with was staggering. I could do nothing to stop the frown from furrowing my brow and I opened my eyes to see what the problem was. A mover dropped a box. They were scurrying around like worker ants, carrying furniture and boxes into the new house. For a moment I wanted to see which mover was responsible for the idiocy, but after all this time, faces blurred together and I dismissed the thought. It didn’t matter; it was just a box after all. Just another box of trinkets in the mountains of useless crap that my mother had accumulated over the years. I shoved my hands into my pockets and leaned back against my car, gazing out at the sprawling lawns that surrounded the estate we were moving into. Again. We’d lived in so many places, I’d lost count. I suppose I could have moved out years ago and lived on my own, but when my mother kept choosing houses with this many rooms, why would I? Besides, I would rather not live on my own. I actually did like my family. The property my mother chose this time was vast in dimension, more so than some of her past choices. The lawns tumbled over thirty acres
