Epilogue Also By Chapter 1 Dane“You’re going to kill us, Jules!” I blurt out as I’m flung hard against the door, the tires screeching angrily as the car navigates the hairpin turn. In the rearview mirror, I watch the leaves swirl up furiously in our wake as Julian flies down the country road in the vintage Mercedes convertible. I know what has him so riled up, the meeting stirred up too many ghosts from the past, forcing us to peer down the dark corridors of our childhood. A place we rarely care to go. “What? And give Richard the pleasure?” Julian snorts, his knuckles white on the steering wheel and there’s a steely determination in his ardent green eyes.My grip tightens on the overhead handle, and I steel myself against indulging his dark mood. It’s been fourteen years since our father’s death, but Julian refuses to let it go. Truth be told, I can’t blame him, but if he doesn’t get his temper under control, he is going to kill us. We’ve just celebrated our twenty-ninth birthday and I was rather hoping to see thirty.“Come on, Jules. Cavendish agreed to all of our terms and we bought his company for a song,” I remind him and wait for a response. He remains as silent as the grave, his jaw clenched, eyes fixed on the road. That face. It’s exactly like looking into a mirror, understandably so being identical twins and all, but we go through some pains to augment the effect. To 99% of the population, Julian and I are entirely indistinguishable. If, however, one were clever and perceptive enough, they’d note the subtle differences. We share the same piercing green eyes, but Julian’s have always possessed a certain darkness that mine seem to lack.“Bastard!” Julian blurts out. “You remember Cavendish coming around the house to see Mom when Dad wasn’t around,” He spares a quick look at me. “You remember all the old photos of the two of them. He dragged us there, to make us face his truth.”I close my eyes, I know where this is headed. “Jules, I’m not in the mood, drop it,” I say as the Carolina countryside whips by.“Now that we’re grown, and mum and dad are gone, he wanted to see us face to face,” Julian continues undeterred. “He wants us to ask him.”Enough! “If you don’t change the topic, I swear I’m jumping out of the fucking car,” I threaten as I grip the door handle.Julian skewers me with his glare and he secures the door locks not daring to call my bluff. His jaw twitches with more he’s dying to say, but my threat works to clamp his mouth shut. We drive on in heavy silence, it’s best to give Julian a little space to cool off.But after a few minutes, I feel the storm clouds brewing in him. I’ve got to get his mind off this stuff, channel his thoughts down more productive paths.“Did you have a chance to look at my final selections for the annual luncheon awards?” I ask, referring to the mentoring program where we select JD Berganhoff’s best and brightest to groom them for a senior leadership role in the organization. “I’ve reviewed your finalist.”“Yeah, I did,” Julian mutters.“I agree with all of your choices except for Ms. Logan Greer, the strategic business analyst.”“You’ve seen her record,” Julian mutters, not taking his eyes off the road. “Her work is stellar, without equal.”“True, but she’s rather young and relatively new to the firm. Shouldn’t we award a more seasoned associate?”“No one’s talking about making her a board member or senior executive,” Julian replies, his tone softens a tad, the rigid set of his shoulders relaxes. He remembers that I’m the last person in the world he wishes to antagonize.“Well, I defer to your judgment in these matters. If you chose her, that’s good enough for me.”Julian glances at me and shrugs. “I’m not settled on Ms. Greer, I simply think she’s talented, and we should develop her regardless as to whether she makes the final cut.”“Agreed,” I say, relieved that Julian has finally slowed down and is driving more rationally. We’re content to ride along in companionable silence for a stretch. The enigmatic bond between identical twins, particularly ours, certainly doesn’t preclude an occasional flare up or sharp discord. But our bouts are typically short-lived and easily forgotten.“Dane…” Julian says in a facetious, whimsical manner.I cock a brow at him. “Yes, Jules?” We turn off the main road and down the lane that leads to the lofty wrought iron gates of Greshmore estate, the home left to us by our parents.“I’m sorry I lost my temper with you, mate,” Julian says in a sufficiently contrite tone. “It’s been a hell of a week.”“No worries, old boy,” I say, having forgiven him ages ago. “You’ll feel better once we get a few pints in you.”“Well, sure but you know what would really take the edge off—” he pumps his brows and flashes me a wolfish grin.I crack
